The Path of Shadows part 2

Ash let out a pained growl, his body convulsing as the curse fought back. She watched in horror as his hands began to twist and claw, his fingers elongating into sharp, wolfish points. But Rowan didn’t stop, pouring every ounce of energy into the ritual, willing herself to stay strong. Just as the darkness seemed to break, Rowan felt a sharp pain in her chest, a jolt of energy that knocked the breath out of her. She gasped, losing her grip on the chant. The candles flickered, and the circle of light wavered. Ash’s transformation stopped midway, leaving him caught between human and wolf, his face twisted in agony. “Rowan, stop!” he growled, his voice a mixture of desperation and fear. “You’re hurting yourself.” She fought to regain her focus, but the pain was overwhelming, her strength draining fast. Her vision darkened, and she could feel herself slipping, the ritual slipping from her grasp. In one desperate move, Ash broke through the circle, lunging forward and wrapping his arms around her, holding her steady. She could feel his heart racing against her own, his warmth anchoring her as the world began to fade. “Rowan,” he whispered, his voice filled with regret. “I’m sorry.” When Rowan awoke, she was back in her cottage, lying beneath her grandmother’s old quilt. The room was dim, the morning light barely breaking through the drawn curtains. Her body ached, and her mind was foggy, but she could feel the familiar warmth of Ash’s presence beside her. She turned her head, meeting his worried gaze. “You… you brought me back here?” He nodded, his expression filled with guilt. “I couldn’t let you do it. The curse—it was taking too much from you.” Rowan closed her eyes, her heart sinking. “I thought I could break it. I thought I was strong enough.” Ash reached out, his hand brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. “You are strong, Rowan. Stronger than anyone I’ve ever met. But some things… they aren’t meant to be undone.” His words lingered in the air, filling her with a quiet sadness. She’d wanted to help him, to give him a life free of fear, but now she understood just how deep the curse went. It was a part of him, woven into his very being. But even as doubt settled over her, Rowan felt a renewed resolve. She wasn’t ready to give up—not on Ash, and not on the strange, powerful bond that had grown between them. “We’ll find another way,” she whispered, more to herself than to him. “I don’t know how, but we will.”
