Chapter 5: The Deal Elena didn't move. Her fingers tightened around the lamp until her knuckles ached. The shadow beneath the door hadn't shifted. Whoever was out there was still standing exactly where they'd been — patient, unhurried, like someone with nowhere else to be. "Elena." The voice sounds closer now. Like he'd pressed his mouth into the gap in the door. "I know you're awake. Open the door." Liam? His voice was unmistakable, and immediately her grip around the lamp increased. "How are you here?" she asked. "Your parents called me. They told me what happened. Elena, I'm here to take you home." "You were in bed with my sister two nights ago." There was a silence. Then came the softer register . "I know. And I'm sorry. But that doesn't matter right now. What matters is getting you out of this house. You were drugged. Whatever papers they put your name on — it doesn't matter. Come home." Elena stood in the dark and felt nothing she expected to feel. No relief. No pull toward the familiar. Just the same quiet precision she'd felt sitting in her car outside his building two nights ago. Like a lock turning somewhere inside her chest. "Who let you in?" she asked. A beat too long. "Someone on the staff." "Someone walked you into a gated estate past full security and directly to my bedroom door," she said evenly. "That doesn't happen by accident. Who sent you, Liam?" Liam said nothing. "Go home," Elena said. "And tell whoever sent you that it didn't work." She heard retreating footsteps followed by silence and the shadow beneath the door disappeared. She opened the door and found hallway empty— but at the far end, the edge of a dark jacket was disappearing around the corner. It was wrong build for Liam. Too precise. Too expensive. Gone before she could see more. She stepped back inside and turned around. Logan Vance was standing in the middle of her room. The scream died before it left her throat. She stumbled back against the door, one hand flying to her chest. Fully upright. No wheelchair anywhere. He'd come through a connecting door set flush with the paneling — one she hadn't noticed in the dark. "You can walk!" Logan didn't answer immediately. Moonlight cut across the room, catching one side of his face. Then replied: "Yes." Elena stared at him and thought about the wheelchair, the careful movements, Margaret's concern, the fact that the entire house behaves as though he were a man trapped inside his own body. "You lied." He lifted an eyebrow. "Constantly." At least he was honest about that. Elena gave a sharp and disbelieving laugh "You drugged me, brought me to a house full of strangers, married me without my consent, and now you're not even—" "I am disabled." The correction came immediately. Something cold entered his voice. "I simply recover better than my enemies realize." Silence settled between them. "Why?" she asked. Logan moved toward the window. "Because somebody tried to kill me." He looked out into the darkness. " The brakes failed on a mountain road. It was a drop that should have ended my life." His gaze shifted back to hers. "But It didn't." The room felt smaller suddenly. "And you think one of your brothers did it?" "I think several people wanted me dead." "That's not the same answer." "No, it isn't." He studied her for a long moment. Then announced: "I want to offer you a deal." Elena folded her arms. "I'm listening." "In public, you will be my wife." He said the word without flinching. "In private, you keep what you've seen tonight to yourself." "And in return?" A corner of his mouth moved. "I make sure nobody ever hurts you again." Elena thought of Emma on those pillows, bored and unashamed. Her father watching her fall. Liam's voice through the door just now — smooth, already angled toward a version of events that made him the one showing up for her. "You don't know anything about me," she said. "I know enough." Logan's eyes didn't leave hers. "I know betrayal when I see it." The words landed harder than she expected because they were true. "Why me specifically?" she asked quietly. Something shifted in his expression. Not suspicion but recognition. "You're asking the right question." He crossed the room, opened the desk drawer, and removed a photograph. Old. Edges worn softer with age. He held it out without a word. Elena took it. A young woman with dark hair stood in the Vance garden smiling brightly. Elena's lost her breadth. "No." Logan said nothing. She looked again. The woman was younger — twenty, maybe twenty-two. But there was no mistaking her. "That's my mother." "Yes." Elena lowered herself into the chair before her knees could make the decision for her. "My father knew her," Logan said. "Long before either of us were born." Elena looked up sharply. "Knew her how?" There was a long pause. "My father spent years trying to answer that question." Her grip on the photograph tightened. "What does that mean?" "It means," Logan said carefully, "that one day she disappeared without goodbye." He held her gaze. "And my father never recovered from it." The photograph trembled slightly in Elena's hand. Her mother's laughing face. This garden. A life that existed before Elena did. Finally, she looked up. "What are you trying to tell me?" "That your arrival here may not be an accident." The room went still for a moment. Outside, wind brushed against the windows. Elena stared at him. "What does that have to do with me?" For the first time all night, Logan hesitated. Trying to decide, in real time, how much to reveal. Then he turned back to the desk. His hand rested on the drawer without opening it. When he looked back at her, his eyes were darker than before. "I found something among my father's papers after his death. Something that connects your family to mine." His voice dropped lower. "The kind of something people kill to keep buried." Elena's pulse quickened. "Show me." Logan's hand stayed on the drawer. "Not yet." His eyes held hers, steady and unreadable. "First — do we have a deal?"
