Chapter Ten – The Intruder

963 Words
The packhouse was no longer a place of safety. As Serena and Lucian burst back through the doors, the air was thick with unease. Wolves shifted restlessly in the hallways, eyes darting toward every shadow. The scent lingered — sharp, unfamiliar, dangerous. Lucian lifted his head, inhaling, his expression hard. “He’s still here.” Serena’s heart hammered. She scanned the corridor, every lantern casting more shadows than light. The silence was worse than noise. Somewhere inside these walls, someone was moving. Watching. Lucian turned to his Beta, a tall wolf named Rian, who had followed close behind. “Seal the exits. No one leaves until I give the word.” Rian nodded and barked orders. Wolves fanned out, footsteps echoing down the hall. Serena remained close to Lucian, the bond burning with his tension. Her voice was quiet, strained. “If they came this far, it means they know exactly where to strike.” Lucian’s jaw tightened. “Which means someone helped them.” The possibility turned Serena’s stomach. A traitor inside the pack. Someone who had opened the door. Lucian led her deeper into the house, past the dining hall and into the main corridor. Every creak of the floorboards, every flutter of a curtain sent her nerves alight. Then a sudden crash shattered the silence. Second floor. Lucian’s head snapped up. Without hesitation, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward the staircase. His steps were soundless, swift, a predator stalking prey. Serena’s pulse raced to match his pace. At the landing, they paused. The corridor stretched long and empty, but the door at the far end stood ajar, a faint light flickering inside. Lucian’s voice was a whisper edged in steel. “Stay behind me.” Serena swallowed hard but nodded. He pushed the door open. The room beyond was small, used for storage. Shelves lined the walls, filled with linens and candles. But the air was colder here, the scent sharper. A figure stood in the center of the room. Cloaked in black, hood pulled low, only the glint of pale eyes visible. Lucian stepped forward, growl rumbling in his chest. “Who are you?” The figure tilted its head. When it spoke, the voice was the same that had echoed in the forest — low, smooth, chilling. “Names are for the living.” Serena’s breath caught. Lucian’s power surged, his Alpha aura filling the space. “You’ve made a mistake stepping into my house.” The intruder did not flinch. Instead, it lifted a hand. Between its fingers gleamed a shard of something dark, carved with the same broken sun symbol. The sight of it made Serena’s chest ache, the bond twisting painfully. Lucian moved instantly, placing himself between her and the shard. His snarl shook the walls. “Put it down.” The figure only smiled, a sliver of pale teeth flashing beneath the hood. “She feels it, doesn’t she? The call. She was born to carry it.” Serena’s voice broke free before she could stop it. “What are you talking about?” The figure turned its eyes to her, and for a moment, the world seemed to still. “You are the key. And soon, Alpha or not, he will not keep you from us.” Lucian lunged. The intruder moved like smoke, slipping past him, knocking shelves to the floor. Serena staggered back as candles rolled across the ground, flames flickering dangerously close to cloth. Lucian struck again, claws flashing, but the figure dissolved into shadow, reappearing near the window. Glass shattered as it leapt into the night. “Damn it.” Lucian rushed to the window, scanning the dark forest below. Nothing but trees and silence. The intruder was gone. Serena clutched the bond burning in her chest, her breath uneven. The ache lingered, heavy and sharp. Lucian turned, his expression fierce, eyes glowing in the dim light. “Did he hurt you?” She shook her head, though her body trembled. “No… but he knew. He knew something about me.” Lucian crossed the room in two strides, gripping her shoulders. “Ignore him. His words are poison.” “But why did it feel true?” she whispered, unable to stop the tears stinging her eyes. “When he said I was the key, something inside me… answered.” Lucian’s gaze softened, though the storm still burned beneath. He pulled her against him, his hand sliding to the back of her head. “Because they’re trying to twist you. That’s what they do. They take doubt and feed it until it destroys everything. I won’t let them.” The bond throbbed between them, fierce and desperate. Serena closed her eyes, holding onto his warmth, but the echo of the intruder’s words would not leave her. You are the key. The rest of the pack stormed into the room then, Rian at the front. “Alpha, we searched the grounds. Nothing. Whoever it was is gone.” Lucian turned to face them, his arm still around Serena. “They won’t get far. Double the patrols. Strengthen the wards at every border. I want eyes everywhere. If a shadow so much as twitches, I want to know.” Rian nodded, his jaw tight. The wolves dispersed quickly, carrying out his orders. When the room was empty again, Lucian looked back at Serena. “We’ll find them. And when we do, they’ll regret ever stepping into this house.” But Serena’s thoughts were elsewhere. The way the intruder’s eyes had locked onto hers. The way the shard had made the bond writhe inside her. She was part of this, whether she wanted to be or not. And deep down, she feared Lucian already knew why. To be continued…
