“What are you doing here, Jake?” she asked. “You shouldn’t have come.”
Jake stepped forward. “Claire, we need to talk. Martin’s men are after you. We need to get you and Danny somewhere safe.”
Claire’s eyes turned to Lexi, with mistrust evident in her gaze. “And who’s this?”
“I’m Lexi, Jake’s sister-in-law,” Lexi said gently. “We’re here to help.”
Claire hesitated, then nodded. “Alright, but we need to be quick. They could find us any moment.”
As they began to gather Claire and Danny’s belongings, the sound of tires on the gravel outside sent a jolt of fear through the house. Lexi peeked through the window, her heart sank as she saw Martin’s car pull up.
“They’re here,” she whispered urgently. “We need to move, now.”
Jake muttered under his breath. “There’s a back door. We can slip out."
They hurriedly made their way to the back of the house, slipping out just as the front door burst open. Martin and his men stormed in, their voices filled with anger and determination.
“Search the place,” Martin barked. “They can’t have gone far.”
Jake led the way through the dense forest, his knowledge of the forest guided them to a hidden path. They moved quickly and silently, the sounds of pursuit growing fainter behind them. After what felt like hours, they reached a clearing and paused to catch their breath.
Lexi turned to Jake. “What now? We can’t keep running forever.”
Jake nodded. “There’s an old hunting lodge a few miles from here. It’s well hidden and should be safe for the night. We’ll figure out our next move from there.”
As they continued through the forest, Claire’s anger simmered beneath the surface. “Jake, you need to explain what’s going on. Why are these men after us?”
Jake took a deep breath, knowing the truth would be painful. “It’s my fault, Claire. Years ago, I got involved with Martin and his associates. It was supposed to be a quick smuggling job, nothing too dangerous. But things went wrong, and I ended up owing them more than I could repay. I thought I’d left that life behind, but they never forgot.”
Claire’s eyes widened in shock. “You put our son in danger because of your criminal past?”
Jake’s voice was filled with regret. “I’m sorry, Claire. I never wanted this. But now we have to deal with it. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you and Danny safe.”
They finally reached the hunting lodge, a small but old building nestled deep in the woods. Inside, it was barely furnished but had all the essentials. Jake checked the perimeter to ensure they weren’t being followed, while Lexi helped Claire settle Danny down.
Once they were secure, Jake sat down with Lexi and Claire. “We need a plan. Martin won’t stop until he finds us. We need to find a way to get out of this mess for good.”
Lexi nodded. “We need some evidence. Something we can use against Martin to make him back off. Do you have anything, Jake? Any proof of his illegal activities?”
Jake paused for a moment, then suddenly looked excited. "There's a storage unit in town where I kept some documents and records from that time, just in case. If we can access them, we might have a valuable bargaining chip."
Claire looked skeptical. “And you think Martin will just let us go if we threaten him?”
“It’s our best shot,” Jake said firmly. “But we need to move fast. Tomorrow morning, we’ll head to the storage unit. If we can get those documents, we might have a chance.”
As they settled in for the night, Lexi couldn’t shake the feeling that they were on the edge of something much bigger. The pieces were falling into place, but the picture was still incomplete. She knew they were running out of time, and the stakes were higher than ever.
The next morning, they set out early, moving swiftly through the forest and back to the car. The drive to town was tense, each of them on edge, expecting an ambush at any moment.
When they arrived at the storage facility, Jake led them to a nondescript unit at the back. He unlocked the door and rummaged through the boxes until he found what he was looking for: a metal case filled with files and documents.
“Here it is,” he said, handing the case to Lexi. “Everything we need to bring Martin down.”
As Lexi opened the case and began to sift through the papers, a sudden noise outside made them freeze. The sound of footsteps, slow and deliberate, echoed through the storage unit.
Lexi looked up, her heart pounding. “We have to get out of here, now.”
But before they could move, the door to the unit slammed shut, and Martin’s cold voice echoed from outside. “Going somewhere?”
They were trapped. The walls of the storage unit seemed to close in, and Lexi knew they were out of time. The game had just taken a deadly turn, and they were right in the middle of it.
Jake’s eyes met Lexi’s, a mix of fear and determination. “We have to fight our way out.”
"You thought you could outsmart me, Jake?" Martin's voice was laced with contempt. "Hand over the case."
Jake swallowed hard, stepping in front of Lexi and Claire protectively. "Leave them out of this, Martin. This is between you and me."
Martin chuckled, a sinister glint in his eyes. "Oh, Jake. Always the hero. But this time, there are no heroes. Only survivors."
Before Jake could respond, Lexi stepped forward, holding up her phone. "I recorded everything. If anything happens to us, this goes straight to the police and the media. You're finished, Martin."
Martin's eyes narrowed, his smile fading. "You think a little recording will stop me? You're more naive than I thought."
In one swift motion, he attempted to grab Lexi, but Jake tried to stop him, shoving him back. The two men struggled, and the metal case fell to the floor. Claire grabbed Danny, pulling him to safety as Lexi reached for the case.
As the struggle intensified, the sound of sirens pierced the air. Lexi's eyes widened in surprise. She hadn't called the police, so who did? Martin froze, his face paling. "What did you do?" he hissed.
Before anyone could answer, the storage unit was flooded with light as police officers stormed in, guns drawn. "Freeze! Hands in the air!"
Martin’s men backed away, their faces blank with fear. Martin glared at Jake and Lexi, seething with rage. "This isn't over," he snarled as the officers handcuffed him.
One officer stepped forward, his expression stern. "We received an anonymous tip about illegal activities here. You're all coming with us for questioning."
Lexi exchanged a puzzled glance with Jake as they were led outside. Who had informed the
police? And why now?
