“I'm exactly where I supposed to be. Aren't you?”
He hadn't thought about it. “I'm here for some reason. Couldn't tell you what it is, but maybe I'm not supposed to know.”
“Is any among us supposed to know what the gods have decreed for us?”
He suspected she'd reached the same conclusion but from an entirely different direction. “If we knew, it'd get in our way.”
She chuckled and nodded. “Because if we knew…”
“… we'd run screaming the other direction.”
Casper and Jayani shared another laugh. For now, the inscrutable reasons notwithstanding, their place was right here, beside each other.
“But what now?” he asked.
Jayani shrugged at him. “How about we sleep out this storm and talk about it tomorrow?”
