Chapter 9

Once I finished, I handed the towel over to Glenda. She held on to it and then opened the door and walked out into the hallway. I followed Glenda to wherever she was taking me. I think while we walked, she was talking to me, but I couldn't have been so sure, as my mind had gone back to the whole conversation with Xander. My mind seemed to keep replaying his words about how he didn't trust me but saw a fighting spirit in me. He'd made out through his words that he'd save me to keep me alive, but it had honestly felt like to me there had been more to the story than he'd been honest about with me. "In here." The words snapped me out of my thoughts as I walked through a door into a kitchen. "This is the back door; you're to use the main walkway rather than the path that we've taken tonight. I didn't want you to get sick from the cold night. The front of the house will be a little mad with everyone heading up to bed. Let's get you something to eat. What do you want?" "I'll ummm... Just something small." I blushed, not really sure what I wanted to eat, never mind what there was to eat in the servant's house, and she hadn't needed to worry about me taking the route we'd just walked as I hadn't been paying attention in the slightest. "Sandwich," Glenda muttered as she busied herself making a quick cheese sandwich for me. I moved, so I was standing at the island bar in the middle as I looked around. The kitchen was huge, well-decorated, and well-equipped. I'd assumed it was because of how many people were staying in the house. I began to wonder if the house had been purposely built or if it had been there on the grounds when Xander had taken the main house. With how modern it looked, I had to think it was more than likely the first option. "Eat." Glenda put the sandwich in front of me, so I picked it up and began to eat while she chatted away about stuff that I wasn't really paying attention to. I'd never been so thankful for a cheese sandwich in all my life. Lucian had been bringing me food, but it was whatever he could find or, as I guessed, whatever his staff at his house had made for themselves, and it was what I guessed were leftovers, and it was always stone cold. Some of the meals would have been amazing had they been hot. "Are you even listening to me?" "Hmm? S...S...Sorry... I just feel a little overwhelmed." I put the small bit of the sandwich that I had left down on the plate and looked at my hands that I'd rested on the top of the table. "It's just... it's just all overwhelming, and it feels like it's a little too much to take in." I confessed to her. "The time here will get better; I doubt it will heal whatever trauma you've been through, but we can try and help you work through it. I'm pretty sure your roommate will want to help in any way she can too." "Room...mate?" I hadn't thought about the fact that I'd have to share a room with another person and that I'd have to talk to them too. I didn't know why, but the idea scared me a little. I guessed it was all down to the fact that I'd spent so long alone that I forgot what having someone in the same room as me was like, and it scared me a little. "You will be fine. Sarah will teach you everything you need to know tomorrow and will look after you while you're here or until you decide to leave." I let out a yawn and rubbed my eyes as Glenda lent across, took the plate, and threw what was left in the bin for me before washing the plate quickly and then coming back to me. "Let's get you to bed; it must have been a long, stressful day for you. I will talk with Lord Xander and see what he wants me to do with you in regard to tomorrow." "What do you mean?" I was confused as I stood up straight, but I winced a little as I shifted wrong and my knee began to hurt. "If he would like you to rest tomorrow, see a doctor to make sure you're ok or just simply get you to work." "I'd just like to get to work," I told her, trying to keep in a yawn. I really didn't want to see a doctor. I didn't want to go over everything that I'd gone through with someone. It was bad enough that, at some point, I'd have to talk about it with him. Sadly, it is not your choice." Glenda laughed. "Now, let's get you up to bed." She led me out of the kitchen and into a hallway. I could see a couple of doors open on either side of the hallway, but she led me straight up the stairs. I hoped my room wasn't that high, as I wasn't sure if my tired and relaxed legs would be able to cope with going up loads of stairs. We ended up going up three flights of stairs and then to the very end of the corridor, where Glenda knocked on the door without hesitation. I really hoped she'd got the right room, as I didn't want to come face to face with some angry person who wasn't happy about being woken up. The door opened, and in the doorway stood a fair-haired woman with dark brown eyes who was wrapped up in a dressing gown with her hair pulled up into a messy bun that looked damp. She looked like she was a little taller than me. "Sarah, this is Rosetta; she's our new starter who came to us tonight. I am passing the responsibility to you to teach her about everything that goes on in these two households. I hope you two will get along. Now good night to you both, and I look forward to seeing you both tomorrow. I'll arrange to have your uniform dropped off for you, as you'll need it." Sarah bowed her head and then looked at me as I yawned yet again, turned my head away, and covered my mouth with my arm. Glenda didn't wait for an answer or anything and just turned away, heading back the way that we'd come. "Hey, let's get you inside. I'd heard we had a newbie, so I got your bed all made up. I hope you don't mind." I blinked at her in confusion as the words didn't really sink into what she was talking about, so I just walked in as she moved to the side for me. The room was pretty big; there was space for two single beds on either side of the room; there was an ensuite bathroom for us; and there was also a desk with a chair, two lots of chests of drawers, and two bedside tables, along with a wardrobe each. I assumed that the other rooms were the same. "It's not much, but we can decorate it with personal things like pictures and stuff. As long as we respect the room and keep it tidy. Lord Xander is pretty cool with whatever we do. I heard that one of the other girls who's been here a while painted her room pink." I couldn't help but laugh as I sat down on the bed, which was freshly made and very basic, unlike Sarah's bed, which had some pretty scatter cushions. I only knew what they were because, when I'd been living with Liam, I'd made the house a little more homely and had bought things like that for the house. "I'm so pleased I finally have a roommate." Sarah sat down on the bed opposite mine and smiled as if she were generally happy that I was there. "I mean, it was cool having my girls come and sleep over in the room with me, but it's not the same as having someone to talk to all the time." I blushed a little. "Ummm, I don't mean to be rude." "Oh yeah, you look exhausted. You should get some sleep now; we have tomorrow to get introduced, as I'm guessing we'll be working together with me showing you what's what and all that." "Thanks," I mumbled as I slipped off my new shoes and slid them under the bed. "Just one thing. Please don't call me Rosetta; I hate it; call me Rosa instead." "Rosa.... Sure! Night Rosa." "Night Sarah," I muttered tiredly as I laid down on the bed. My head hit the pillow, and sleep just washed over me. I had no idea if Sarah had turned out the lights or anything. My body just felt so relaxed that it went straight to sleep. I didn't care; tonight I was allowing myself the luxury of rest and relaxation to get my strength up, as I knew I was going to need it in the following weeks if I was to succeed in what I'd been told to do. It was going to be a long five weeks.
