Chapter Eighteen: Nearness

Maya sat on the edge of the couch, fingers twisting nervously in her lap. Alex moved around the room, deliberately close, letting her presence brush against Maya’s shoulder and arm. Every subtle touch made her heart race, leaving her breathless in ways she couldn’t fully explain.

“You’re tense again,” Alex murmured, leaning closer. Her voice was soft, intimate, carrying a certainty that both thrilled and unnerved Maya. “You feel it, don’t you? The pull?”

Maya swallowed, unable to form words. Alex’s gaze was intense, teasing, and every small movement—fingers brushing along Maya’s hand, a shoulder brushing hers as she adjusted a cushion—made her pulse thrum faster.

Alex sat beside her, deliberately close, letting their knees brush together. “Look at me,” she whispered, tilting her head. Maya obeyed, eyes wide, aware of the warmth radiating from Alex.

Alex’s hand moved lightly over Maya’s arm, tracing slow, deliberate paths from her wrist up to her elbow. “You notice every little touch,” she murmured. “Every brush, every movement… it matters.”

Maya’s cheeks flushed, mind spinning. She wanted to look away, to create space, but Alex’s presence was magnetic. She felt the tension tighten, a delicious mix of anxiety and anticipation curling in her chest.

Then Alex leaned in slightly, just enough for Maya to feel the warmth of her breath near her cheek. “You can’t help it,” Alex whispered, almost teasing. “You’re aware… alert… and it’s mine to see.”

Maya exhaled shakily, realizing how much she was reacting, how impossible it was to ignore the closeness. Each subtle gesture—hand on arm, knee brushing, whispered words—pulled her deeper into Alex’s orbit.

When Alex finally leaned back, giving Maya a moment to breathe, the tension lingered like electricity. Maya realized, with a mix of wonder and apprehension, that she had never felt anything like this—and that resisting Alex’s presence would be far harder than she’d imagined.
