Chapter Thirteen: After the Night

The city lights faded behind them as Alex guided Maya through the apartment door. Maya’s mind was still tangled, each memory of the dinner and subtle touches under the table racing through her thoughts.

“Close the door,” Alex instructed softly, her tone carrying an unspoken weight. Maya complied, almost automatically, and leaned against it for a moment, trying to steady her pulse.

Alex moved past her, shedding her coat with deliberate ease. “Relax,” she murmured, slipping into the living room. “You’re tense. Let me see to that."

Maya’s stomach tightened. She tried to brush it off with a laugh, but it caught in her throat. Alex’s presence filled the room entirely, commanding yet calm, and Maya felt herself drawn toward her against her own will.

“Sit,” Alex said, motioning to the couch. Maya obeyed, every movement heavy with hesitation. She had tried to act composed during dinner, tried to keep her thoughts focused on the night out—but Alex had left an imprint on her, subtle yet impossible to ignore.

Alex perched beside her, hand brushing lightly over Maya’s arm. The touch was teasing but deliberate, igniting a shiver along her spine. “You feel it, don’t you?” Alex whispered, her gaze locked on Maya. “That pull, that curiosity? You can’t stop noticing me.”

Maya’s breath hitched. She wanted to protest, to step back, but every instinct drew her closer. Words failed her, and all she could do was focus on the weight of Alex’s eyes, the command in her posture, the magnetic force of her presence.

Alex leaned back, letting the tension stretch, letting Maya feel the full effect of the evening. “Good,” she said softly. “I like that… your attention, your awareness, how responsive you are. It makes you… real.”

Maya’s pulse raced as Alex moved around the room, casually adjusting a few things, yet every motion reminded her of the invisible tether between them. By the time Alex settled beside her again, Maya realized nothing from tonight would feel normal anymore.
