Saturday dawned bright, carrying with it the kind of gentle warmth that seemed to make the city hum. Maya had agreed to meet Alex early; they were supposed to shop for Jade’s upcoming birthday. By midmorning, the two of them were weaving through the lively marketplace, the air thick with the scent of roasted corn and fried plantains.
“Look at this one,” Alex said, holding up a teal silk scarf. “It practically screams Jade.”
Maya’s eyes softened. “You’re right. She’ll love it. Sometimes I think you understand her better than I do.”
Alex chuckled, but there was a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. “Maybe I just pay attention.”
The remark lingered longer than it should have. Maya’s thoughts strayed briefly to Daniel, her boyfriend. He rarely remembered the small things—her mother’s favorite color, the way she liked her tea. But Alex always seemed to notice, to anticipate.
They spent another hour drifting from stall to stall, laughter coming easily. Maya bought earrings; Alex teased her about indecision. Yet, beneath the lightness, an undercurrent of something unsaid tugged between them.
When they returned to Alex’s apartment, Maya collapsed onto the couch with a sigh of contentment. Alex disappeared into her room, muttering about changing clothes.
The sounds of hangers shifting and drawers opening filled the quiet space. Then Alex’s voice rang out, slightly strained: “Maya, can you grab me some water?”
“Sure,” Maya called back, padding toward the kitchen. As she passed the half-open bedroom door, her gaze flickered inside—just for a moment.
Alex stood before the mirror, shirt halfway undone, posture stiff as though startled mid-motion. Her reflection betrayed a tension she tried to hide.
Maya’s breath caught. Something about the image unsettled her, though she couldn’t name why. She looked away quickly, pretending she hadn’t seen.
Moments later, Alex emerged, her usual grin firmly in place. “Thanks,” she said, taking the water.
Maya forced a laugh, but her heart still beat too fast. For the first time, she wondered if she knew Alex as well as she thought.
