Chapter 3 A Dangerous Realization

470 Words
Julian's penthouse overlooked the sleeping city through walls of glass and steel. It was quiet after the van and the hotel. He poured me water, set it within reach, and waited until I could hold the glass without spilling it. “Embarrassment was only the first step,” he said. “The press gets a public breakdown. Blackwood keeps you out of sight. By the time anyone asks where you went, Martha has you declared incompetent.” I set the glass down before my hand could shake again. The scandal gave Martha grounds to invoke the trust clause, and Blackwood kept me from standing in a courtroom to challenge her. Yesterday's small details lined up. Lily, my stepsister, had pressed the keycard into my hand yesterday afternoon. “It's the bridal suite, Evie. A gift from me and Mom.” Martha had lit the vanilla candle there. “Just to calm your nerves, my dear.” Arthur had opened the door with the photographers already behind him. I remembered my father's lawyer, Mr. Abernathy, explaining my inheritance years ago. He had slowed down over one clause in the Vanderbilt trust, though it had seemed impossible that it would ever matter. *“In the event of the beneficiary's mental incapacitation or actions bringing significant scandal upon the family name, all control of the assets reverts to her legal guardian.”* Until I turned twenty-five, I still had a legal guardian. Martha. The hotel photographs satisfied the scandal clause in public. Blackwood and Dr. Finch could supply whatever diagnosis Martha needed on paper. I thought of all the work Arthur had quietly handed me while calling it help between partners. I dealt with his board, opened doors through Vanderbilt contacts, and rewrote the press statements he mangled before they reached the papers. He had used that work, then called me fragile when he needed my signature more than my judgment. The drug was wearing off. I flexed my fingers. They obeyed me now. Julian watched me rise from the sofa and test my balance against the table. “I can make a few calls. Martha loses the guardianship, and Arthur loses his career. They can both be finished by sunrise.” An hour earlier, I would have let him do it. But Martha could then say Julian had taken an unstable girl from medical care and seized control of her trust for himself. Her story would change; the doubt would remain. “No. If you do it, everyone sees a Thorne family fight. I want the evidence under my name.” I stood. My knees held, and so did Julian's gaze. “Take me back to the hotel. They staged the whole thing. Someone had to record the room before the press came in, and I want that recording.”
