The snow had stopped. The cold remained. The sun was rising over Seattle, painting the sky in shades of gray.
Ethan sat in the FBI field office, staring at the files spread across the table. Julian Cross was dead. Elena Volkov had killed him. But the truth was still out there. Someone else was pulling the strings. Someone above Julian.
Alex stood by the window, his back to the room. He hadn't spoken in hours. Elena sat in the corner, her hands folded in her lap. She looked tired. They all looked tired.
Nora walked into the room. Her face was pale, her eyes red. She'd been working all night.
"We have a problem," she said.
Ethan looked up. "What?"
"Julian Cross's death has created a power vacuum. People are scrambling. Some of them are trying to destroy evidence. Others are trying to protect themselves."
Ethan nodded. "We expected that."
"But there's more. Someone has been leaking information to the press. Details about the conspiracy. Details that only a few people know."
Alex turned. "Who?"
"We don't know. But whoever it is, they're trying to control the narrative."
Elena stood. "It's him. The person above Julian. He's trying to protect himself."
Nora looked at her. "Who is he?"
"I don't know. But he's smart. He's been hiding for years. He knows how to stay invisible."
Ethan stood. "Then we need to find him. Before he destroys everything we've built."
"How?" Nora asked. "We have no leads. No clues. Nothing."
Ethan walked to the window. The city was waking up, the streets filling with cars and people.
"We have the files," he said. "The ones Alex gave us. There has to be something in there. A name. A connection. Something we missed."
Alex turned. "I've been through those files a hundred times. There's nothing."
"Then we need to look again. Together."
They spent the next few hours going through the files. Every document. Every photograph. Every transaction.
It was slow work. Painstaking. But they didn't give up.
Ava arrived in the afternoon. She looked tired, but her eyes were bright.
"Any luck?" she asked.
Ethan shook his head. "Nothing yet."
Ava walked to the table. She picked up a photograph. It was an old one, yellowed with age.
"Who is this?" she asked.
Ethan looked at the photograph. It showed a group of men in suits, standing in front of a building.
"That's from the King's Gambit case," he said. "That's Julian Cross. And that's Andrew Pierce."
Ava pointed to a man in the background. "What about him?"
Ethan squinted. The man was standing in the shadows, his face partially hidden.
"I don't know," Ethan said. "I've never seen him before."
Nora walked over. She studied the photograph.
"That's strange," she said. "He doesn't belong in this picture."
"What do you mean?"
"He's not part of the investigation. He's not a police officer. He's not a journalist. He's just... there."
Ethan's heart pounded. "Maybe that's him. The person above Julian."
Nora nodded. "It's possible. But we need to find out who he is."
"How?"
Nora pulled out her phone. "I'll send this to the lab. They can enhance the image. Maybe we can get a better look at his face."
Hours passed. The lab called back with the enhanced image.
Ethan stared at the screen. The face was clearer now. The man was older, with sharp features and cold eyes.
"I recognize him," Alex said.
Ethan turned. "Who is it?"
"His name is Marcus Webb."
Ethan's blood ran cold. "Marcus? The detective?"
"Yes. He's been part of the conspiracy from the beginning."
Ethan shook his head. "That's not possible. Marcus helped us. He arrested Mark Hollister. He helped expose the conspiracy."
"He helped expose the players he wanted to expose. He made himself look like the good guy."
Ethan stared at the screen. Marcus Webb. The detective who'd interrogated him. The detective who'd been his ally.
"I don't believe it," Ethan said.
"Believe it. He's been playing us all along."
Ethan stood. "I need to talk to him."
"Ethan, wait—"
"No. I need to hear it from him."
Ethan walked out of the room. Ava followed him.
"Ethan, you can't just confront him. He's dangerous."
"I don't care. He lied to me. He used me. And I'm going to make him pay."
Ethan drove to Marcus's apartment. The building was quiet, the streets empty.
He knocked on the door. Marcus opened it.
"Ethan," he said. "I was wondering when you'd come."
"Did you know? About the conspiracy? About the person above Julian?"
Marcus stepped aside. "Come in. We need to talk."
Ethan walked into the apartment. It was small, cluttered with boxes. Marcus sat on the couch, his face tired.
"I've been waiting for this moment," Marcus said. "I knew you'd find out eventually."
"So it's true? You're part of the conspiracy?"
"I was part of it. A long time ago. Before I knew what it really was."
Ethan's fists clenched. "You lied to me. You used me."
"I did what I had to do to survive. The conspiracy was bigger than me. Bigger than anyone. I couldn't fight it alone."
"So you joined them."
"I pretended to join them. I fed them information. I helped them cover up their crimes. But I was also collecting evidence. Evidence that would bring them down."
Ethan stared at him. "You were a double agent?"
"I was trying to survive. And I was trying to help. Everything I did, I did to protect innocent people."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I couldn't trust you. Not then. You were too broken. Too desperate. You would have done something reckless."
"And now?"
"Now I can trust you. You've proven yourself. You've fought for the truth. You've exposed the conspiracy."
Ethan sat down. His mind was spinning.
"Who's the person above Julian?" he asked.
Marcus shook his head. "I don't know. I've been trying to find out for years. But whoever it is, they're careful. They never leave a trail."
"Then how do we find them?"
Marcus pulled out a file. "This is everything I've collected. Names, dates, transactions. It's not complete, but it's a start."
Ethan took the file. "Thank you."
"I'm sorry, Ethan. For everything. I should have told you sooner."
"It's okay. We're going to fix this. Together."
Ethan walked out of the apartment. Ava was waiting for him in the hallway.
"What did he say?" she asked.
"He's been working against the conspiracy. He's been trying to expose the person above Julian."
"Can we trust him?"
Ethan looked at the file in his hands. "I don't know. But we need his help."
They drove back to the field office. The team was waiting for them.
Ethan spread the file across the table. "This is everything. Marcus Webb gave it to us."
Nora studied the documents. "This is incredible. It's the missing piece."
"Can we use it?"
"We can. But we need to move fast. Whoever's above Julian is going to try to destroy this evidence."
Ethan nodded. "Then we need to find them before they do."
The next few days were a blur of work.
They went through every document. Every name. Every transaction. Slowly, they started to see a pattern.
A name kept appearing. A name that wasn't connected to any of the players.
"Thomas Hart," Alex said. "His name is everywhere."
Ethan looked at the documents. "Thomas Hart is in prison. He's been in prison for weeks."
"Maybe. But his name is on these documents. He's connected to the person above Julian."
Ethan's heart pounded. "We need to talk to him."
"He won't talk. He's protected by the system."
"Then we need to find another way."
Elena stepped forward. "I can help. I have contacts in the prison. People who owe me favors."
Ethan looked at her. "You'll help us?"
"I want the truth. Just like you."
Ethan nodded. "Okay. Let's do it."
They arranged a meeting with Thomas Hart. The prison was cold, the walls covered in gray.
Thomas sat behind a glass window. His face was pale, his eyes tired.
"Ethan Cole," he said. "I was wondering when you'd come."
"You know why I'm here."
"You want to know about the person above Julian. The person who's been controlling everything."
"Yes."
Thomas was silent for a moment. Then he said, "His name is Alexander Kane."
Ethan's blood ran cold. "Alexander Kane? The billionaire?"
"The same. He's been running the conspiracy for thirty years. He's the one who recruited me. He's the one who recruited everyone."
"Why? What does he want?"
"Power. Control. Money. The same things everyone wants."
Ethan leaned forward. "Where can I find him?"
"He's not in the country. He's been hiding in Europe for years. But he's coming back. He's planning something."
"What?"
"I don't know. But I know it's big. He wants to rebuild everything we destroyed."
Ethan stood. "Thank you."
Thomas nodded. "Good luck, Ethan. You're going to need it."
Ethan walked out of the prison. Ava was waiting for him.
"Alexander Kane," she said. "The billionaire."
"He's the one. He's been running the conspiracy from the beginning."
"Where is he?"
"He's in Europe. But he's coming back. He's planning something."
Ava's face was pale. "What are we going to do?"
"We're going to stop him. Whatever it takes."
Ethan pulled out his phone. He typed a message to Alex.
"We found him. Alexander Kane. He's coming back."
The response came fast.
"I know. I've been tracking him for years. We need to stop him before he gets here."
Ethan typed again. "How?"
"Meet me at the King's Gambit building. Tonight. I have a plan."
Ethan looked at Ava. "Alex has a plan."
"Are we going to trust him?"
"We don't have a choice."
That night, Ethan stood in the King's Gambit building. The lights were off, the room dark.
Alex walked in. His face was grim.
"We need to move fast," Alex said. "Alexander Kane is already in the country. He's here to destroy everything we've built."
"How do we stop him?"
Alex pulled out a file. "I've been tracking him for years. I know his patterns. His habits. His weaknesses."
"Where is he now?"
"He's at a hotel downtown. The Grand Hotel. He's meeting with his associates."
Ethan nodded. "Let's go."
They drove to the Grand Hotel. The building was tall, the windows dark.
Ethan walked to the entrance. Alex followed close behind.
"What's the plan?" Ethan asked.
"We go in. We find him. And we stop him."
"And if he tries to escape?"
"Then we make sure he doesn't."
They walked into the hotel. The lobby was empty, the lights dim.
Alexander Kane was in the penthouse. The elevator ride was slow, the silence heavy.
The doors opened onto the penthouse. The room was large, the windows offering a panoramic view of the city.
Alexander Kane sat in the center of the room. He was old, his face lined with age. But his eyes were sharp, his smile cold.
"Ethan Cole," he said. "I've been waiting for you."
Ethan stepped forward. "You know why I'm here."
"You want to stop me. You want to expose me. You want to destroy everything I've built."
"Yes."
Alexander laughed. "You can't stop me. I've been doing this for thirty years. I'm too powerful. Too connected."
"I don't care. I'm going to stop you anyway."
Alexander stood. "Then you're a fool."
"Maybe. But I'm a fool who's going to win."
Ethan moved. He lunged forward, his fist connecting with Alexander's face. The old man stumbled, falling to the ground.
Alex grabbed him. "It's over, Alexander."
Alexander laughed. "This isn't over. It's just beginning."
Ethan knelt down beside him. "You're going to prison. You're going to spend the rest of your life there."
"Maybe. But there are others. People who will continue my work."
"Then I'll stop them too."
Alexander looked at him. "You're a stubborn man, Ethan Cole."
"I know."
Ethan stood. Alex pulled Alexander to his feet.
"Let's go," Alex said.
They walked out of the penthouse. Alexander was in custody. The conspiracy was finally over.
But Ethan knew it wasn't the end. There were others. People who would try to take Alexander's place.
He was ready for them.
