The New Beginning

The sun was warm on Ethan's face. He stood on the balcony of his new apartment, looking out at the city. Seattle stretched out before him, a sprawling metropolis of glass and steel. The sky was clear, the air fresh. It was a beautiful day. Ava walked out onto the balcony. She was holding two cups of coffee. She handed one to him and stood beside him. "Beautiful view," she said. "Yes. It is." "I can't believe we finally have our own place." Ethan smiled. "I know. It feels like a dream." Ava leaned against the railing. "What are you thinking about?" "The past. The future. Everything." "That's a lot to think about." Ethan nodded. "I've been thinking about my father. About what he would think of all this." "He would be proud of you." Ethan looked at her. "You think so?" "I know so. You exposed the truth. You brought everyone to justice. You did what he couldn't do." Ethan was silent for a moment. Then he said, "I hope so." Ava took his hand. "He's watching over you. I know he is." Ethan smiled. "Thank you." They stood in silence, watching the city below. Ethan's phone buzzed. He pulled it out. It was a text from Nora. "Ethan, I have some news. Can you come to the field office?" Ethan typed a reply. "I'll be there." He put away his phone. Ava looked at him. "Everything okay?" "Something came up. I need to go to the field office." Ava nodded. "I'll come with you." They drove to the field office. The building was quiet, the halls empty. Nora was waiting for them in her office. Her face was pale, her eyes red. "What happened?" Ethan asked. "We found something. Something about the conspiracy." Ethan's heart sank. "What?" "A name. A name we missed." Nora handed him a file. Ethan opened it. Inside was a single document. It was a list of names. Names of people involved in the conspiracy. Ethan recognized most of them. Elena Volkov. Andrew Pierce. Mark Hollister. Thomas Hart. Alexander Trenton. But there was one name he didn't recognize. "Who is this?" Ethan asked. Nora looked at the name. "His name is David Reyes." Ethan's blood ran cold. "David Reyes? Ava's father?" "Yes. He was involved in the conspiracy from the beginning." Ethan shook his head. "That's not possible. He's dead." "He faked his death. Just like everyone else." Ava stepped forward. Her face was pale, her eyes wide. "My father? He was part of the conspiracy?" "It appears so. He was one of the original members." Ava shook her head. "No. That's not true. He was a good man." "He was trying to leave. He was working with Maria Bennett to expose the truth." Ethan looked at the document. "Where is he now?" "We don't know. He disappeared after Maria Bennett was arrested." Ethan was silent for a moment. Then he said, "We need to find him." "Ethan, wait—" "No. He knows the truth. He knows everything." Ava stepped forward. "I'm coming with you." Ethan nodded. "Let's go." They drove to Ava's father's house. The building was old, the windows covered in dust. Ava pushed open the door. The house was empty, the floors covered in dust. "He's not here," she said. Ethan walked through the rooms. "He might have left something behind." They searched every room. Every closet. Every drawer. And then they found it. A letter in the basement. Ava opened it. Her hands were shaking. "To my daughter Ava. If you're reading this, then I'm gone. And you've found the truth. I was part of the conspiracy. I was working with Elena Volkov. We built the network together. But I made a mistake. I fell in love with your mother. And she made me want to be a better man. I tried to leave the conspiracy. I tried to expose the truth. But they wouldn't let me. I had to disappear. I'm sorry, Ava. I'm so sorry. — Your father." Ava's eyes filled with tears. "He was trying to leave. He was trying to do the right thing." Ethan wrapped his arms around her. "I know. And he succeeded." "How? He disappeared. He left us." "He left to protect you. If he had stayed, they would have killed him. They would have killed you." Ava was silent for a long moment. Then she said, "Where is he now?" Ethan shook his head. "I don't know. But we're going to find him." The next few days were a blur of work. Ethan and his team went through every file. Every document. Every photograph. They were looking for anything that could lead them to David Reyes. And then they found it. A photograph. It showed David Reyes with a group of people. A group of people who looked familiar. Ethan studied the photograph. "That's Elena Volkov. And that's Andrew Pierce. And that's Julian Cross." Ava looked at the photograph. "And that's my father." "Yes. He was in the center of it all." Ethan looked at the photograph again. And then he noticed something. A man standing in the background. A man he didn't recognize. "Who is this?" he asked. Ava studied the man. "I don't know. I've never seen him before." Ethan looked closer. The man was young, in his twenties. He had dark hair and sharp eyes. "We need to find out who he is," Ethan said. "How?" Ethan pulled out his phone. "I'll call Nora." He called Nora and described the man. "I'll run him through the system," Nora said. "I'll get back to you." Hours passed. Then Nora called back. "I found him," she said. "His name is Michael Reyes." Ethan's blood ran cold. "Michael Reyes? Ava's brother?" "Yes. He was involved in the conspiracy from the beginning." Ethan shook his head. "That's not possible. Ava doesn't have a brother." "She didn't know about him. He was hidden. Just like everyone else." Ethan was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Where is he now?" "He's at the Volkov estate. The same place where you found Elena Volkov." Ethan nodded. "I'll go there." "Ethan, wait—" "No. I need to stop him." Ethan grabbed his coat and walked out the door. The Volkov estate was quiet when he arrived. The mansion was dark, the windows covered in dust. Ethan walked to the entrance. The door was unlocked. He pushed it open and stepped inside. The mansion was empty, the floors covered in dust. Ethan walked through the halls, his footsteps echoing in the silence. And then he found him. Michael Reyes was sitting in a chair, his hands folded in his lap. He was young, in his twenties, with dark hair and sharp eyes. "Ethan Cole," he said. "I was wondering when you'd come." "Your father was part of the conspiracy. He was trying to leave." Michael nodded. "I know. He told me everything." "Where is he now?" "I don't know. He disappeared after Maria Bennett was arrested." Ethan shook his head. "You're lying." Michael smiled. It was a cold smile, filled with years of training. "I'm not lying. He's been hiding for years. He knows how to stay invisible." Ethan stepped closer. "Then why are you still here?" "Because I wanted to meet you. I wanted to see the man who's been destroying my mother's empire." Ethan shook his head. "I'm not destroying anything. I'm exposing the truth." "The truth is a weapon. It can destroy people. It can destroy families." "I don't care. I need to find your father." Michael was silent for a moment. Then he said, "I can help you." Ethan's eyes narrowed. "Why would you help me?" "Because I'm tired of hiding. I'm tired of running. I want it to end." Michael pulled out a file. "This is everything I know about my father. His habits. His patterns. His weaknesses." Ethan took the file. "Thank you." "Don't thank me. Just stop him." Ethan walked out of the mansion and into the night. The rain had started again, falling in thick drops. Ava was waiting for him in the parking lot. "What happened?" she asked. "Michael gave me a file. Everything about your father." Ava's face was pale. "Can we use it?" "We can. But we need to move fast. He's still out there." Ethan pulled out his phone. He called Nora. "We have a lead," he said. "Michael Reyes gave us a file. It has everything about David." Nora was silent for a moment. Then she said, "I'll get a team together." The next few days were a blur of work. Ethan and his team went through every document. Every name. Every transaction. Slowly, they started to see a pattern. A location. A cabin in the mountains. The same place where Sarah Vance had found her sister. "He's there," Ethan said. "David is at the cabin." "How do you know?" Ava asked. "Because it's the same place where Sophia Vance was hiding. He's using it as a base." Ethan stood. "We need to go there." "Ethan, wait—" "No. I need to stop him." Ethan grabbed his coat and walked out the door. The cabin was hidden in the trees. It was small, run-down. But there was smoke coming from the chimney. "He's here," Ava said. Ethan parked the car. They walked to the cabin. The door was unlocked. Ethan pushed it open and stepped inside. David Reyes was sitting by the fire. He was old, his face lined with age. But his eyes were sharp, watching them closely. "Ava," he said. "I knew you'd come." Ava walked closer. "Why? Why did you do this?" "I did it to protect you. To protect all of us." "By becoming a monster?" "I became a monster so you wouldn't have to." Ava shook her head. "I don't believe you." David stood. "It's true. I was trying to leave. I was trying to expose the truth." "Then why did you disappear?" "Because they would have killed me. They would have killed you. I had to keep you safe." Ava was silent for a moment. Then she said, "I forgive you." David's eyes filled with tears. "Thank you." "Come with me. We can fix this. We can make it right." David nodded. "Okay." He walked to Ava and hugged her. "I'm sorry," he said. "I'm so sorry." "It's okay. It's going to be okay." Ethan watched them. The father and daughter, finally reunited after years of pain. He walked to the door and stepped outside. The snow had started again, covering the cabin in white. Ava walked out beside him. "What happened?" he asked. "I forgave him. He's coming with us." Ethan nodded. "That's good." They walked to the car. David followed them. "Thank you," David said. "Don't thank me yet. We still have work to do." They drove back to the city. The snow was falling, covering the streets in white. Ethan looked at the road ahead. The conspiracy was finally over. The players were in prison. The truth was out. But he knew there would be more challenges. More fights. More battles. And he was ready for them.
