The world stopped.
Ethan stood in Nora's office, the document trembling in his hands. Alex Chen. His partner. His friend. The man who had faked his death. The man who had been The Watcher. The man who had helped him expose the conspiracy. And now, according to this document, the man who had been pulling the strings from the very beginning.
It couldn't be true. It had to be a mistake.
Ava stepped closer. Her face was pale, her eyes wide.
"Ethan, what does it say?"
Ethan couldn't speak. The words blurred on the page. He read them again, hoping they would change.
"Alex Chen. Original member of the conspiracy. Recruited by Marcus Webb. Served as The Watcher to manipulate Ethan Cole into exposing rival factions."
Ethan's hands were shaking. "It says Alex was part of the conspiracy from the beginning. He was recruited by Marcus Webb. He was The Watcher to manipulate me."
Ava shook her head. "That's not possible. Alex helped you. He exposed the truth."
"He exposed what Marcus wanted exposed. He used me to destroy Marcus's enemies."
Nora walked to them. "I'm sorry, Ethan. I know this is hard to hear."
Ethan looked at her. "Where did you get this document?"
"It was hidden in Marcus Webb's personal files. We found it during the search of his apartment."
Ethan was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Where is Alex now?"
"We don't know. He disappeared after Marcus was arrested."
Ethan stood. "I need to find him."
"Ethan, wait—"
"No. I need to hear it from him."
Ethan grabbed his coat and walked out the door.
The drive to the King's Gambit building was a blur. The streets were empty, the city dark. Ethan's mind was racing, trying to process what he'd just learned.
Alex. His partner. His friend. The man who had saved his life. The man who had destroyed his life.
Ava sat beside him, her hand on his arm.
"Ethan, maybe there's an explanation. Maybe he was forced."
"I don't care. He lied to me. He used me."
"He was trying to protect you."
"By manipulating me? By killing innocent people?"
Ava was silent. There was nothing she could say.
Ethan parked in front of the King's Gambit building. The structure rose into the night sky, dark and imposing.
He walked to the entrance. The door was unlocked.
He pushed it open and stepped inside. The lobby was empty, the lights off.
Ethan walked to the elevator. He pressed the button and waited.
The ride was slow, the silence heavy.
The doors opened onto the executive suite. The room was empty, the furniture gone.
But there was a figure standing by the window. A figure he recognized.
Alex.
Ethan walked closer. "Alex."
Alex turned. His face was pale, his eyes tired. He looked like he hadn't slept in weeks.
"Ethan. I knew you'd come."
"I found the document. I know the truth."
Alex nodded. "I know. I was wondering when you'd find out."
"You lied to me. You used me. You manipulated me."
Alex was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Yes. I did."
"Why? Why would you do that?"
Alex walked to the table and sat down. He looked old, broken.
"Marcus Webb recruited me years ago. Before the fire. Before everything. He told me he was trying to expose the conspiracy. He told me he needed my help."
"So you joined him."
"I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought I was helping to expose the truth."
"But you were just helping him destroy his enemies."
Alex nodded. "Yes. I realized that too late."
Ethan shook his head. "You killed innocent people. You destroyed lives."
"I did what I had to do to survive. To protect the people I loved."
"You could have walked away. You could have told the truth."
"I couldn't. Marcus would have killed me. He would have killed everyone I loved."
Ethan was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Why did you become The Watcher? Why did you pretend to be a killer?"
Alex's eyes flickered. "Because I needed to force you to act. I needed to push you to expose the truth. You were the only one who could do it."
Ethan shook his head. "You killed Stanley Morrison. You killed innocent people."
"Stanley was part of the conspiracy. He was feeding information to Marcus."
"That doesn't make it right."
Alex was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "I know. I'm sorry."
Ethan walked to the window. The city stretched out before him, glittering with lights.
"What happens now?" Ethan asked.
Alex stood. "I'm turning myself in. I'm going to prison."
Ethan turned. "You're giving up?"
"I'm facing the consequences. I've been running for too long. I'm ready to stop."
Ethan was silent for a moment. Then he said, "I'll take you in."
Alex nodded. "I know."
Ethan pulled out his handcuffs. "Alex Chen, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, arson, and racketeering."
Alex raised his hands. "I understand."
Ethan cuffed him. "Let's go."
They walked out of the building and into the night. The rain had stopped, the sky clear.
Ethan led Alex to the car. Ava was waiting for them.
"What happened?" she asked.
"He's turning himself in."
Ava nodded. "Okay."
They drove to the police station. The building was quiet, the halls empty.
Ethan led Alex to the booking desk.
"Alex Chen," Ethan said. "He's turning himself in."
The officer nodded. He took Alex's fingerprints and led him away.
Alex looked back at Ethan. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For believing in me. For never giving up on me."
Ethan shook his head. "I don't know if I can forgive you."
"I'm not asking for forgiveness. I'm asking for understanding."
Ethan was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Goodbye, Alex."
"Goodbye, Ethan."
Alex was led away. The door closed behind him.
Ethan stood alone in the hallway. His heart was heavy, his mind racing.
Ava walked in. She wrapped her arms around him.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"I don't know. I just arrested my best friend."
"He did the right thing. He turned himself in."
Ethan nodded. "I know. That's what makes it so hard."
They walked out of the police station and into the night. The streets were empty, the city quiet.
Ethan's phone buzzed. He pulled it out.
It was a text from an unknown number.
"You did it, Ethan. You exposed the truth. You brought everyone to justice. But the fight isn't over. There are others. People who will try to continue the work."
Ethan stared at the screen. He typed a reply.
"Then I'll stop them too."
"I know you will. That's why I believe in you."
The line went dead.
Ethan put away his phone. Ava looked at him.
"Who was it?"
Ethan smiled. "A friend."
Ava nodded. "Let's go home."
Ethan looked at her. "Home?"
"Yes. Home."
Ethan smiled. "I like the sound of that."
They walked into the night, the city quiet around them.
For the first time in ten years, Ethan felt at peace.
But he knew the peace wouldn't last. There were still others out there. People who would try to continue the work.
And Ethan would be ready for them.
He always was.
The next morning, Ethan woke early. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a warm glow across the bedroom.
He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. His mind was quiet, his heart at peace.
Ava stirred beside him. She reached out and touched his arm.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"I'm fine. I'm more than fine."
Ava smiled. "Good."
They got dressed and had breakfast together. It was a simple meal, but it felt special.
Ethan's phone buzzed. He picked it up.
It was a text from Nora.
"Ethan, I have some news. Can you come to the field office?"
Ethan typed a reply.
"I'll be there."
He put away his phone. Ava looked at him.
"What is it?"
"Nora wants to see me. Something came up."
Ava nodded. "I'll come with you."
They got dressed and drove to the field office. The streets were busy, the city alive.
Nora was waiting for them in her office. Her face was pale, but there was a smile on her face.
"What happened?" Ethan asked.
"We found something. Something good."
Nora handed Ethan a file. He opened it.
Inside was a letter. Written in Alex's handwriting.
"Ethan, if you're reading this, I'm in prison. And I want you to know the truth. Everything I did, I did to protect you. I was recruited by Marcus Webb. I was forced to do terrible things. But I also tried to help. I tried to expose the truth. I tried to bring everyone to justice. I'm sorry I couldn't tell you the truth. I'm sorry I had to lie. But I hope you can forgive me. I love you, Ethan. You were always the best partner a man could ask for. — Alex."
Ethan's eyes filled with tears. He read the letter three times.
Ava walked to him. "What does it say?"
"He was trying to protect me. He was forced to do terrible things. But he also tried to help."
Ava wrapped her arms around him. "He loved you. He was trying to do the right thing."
Ethan nodded. "I know. That's what makes it so hard."
He folded the letter and put it in his pocket.
"Let's go home," he said.
They walked out of the field office and into the sun. The sky was clear, the air fresh.
Ethan looked at the city. Seattle stretched out before him, beautiful and alive.
The conspiracy was over. The truth was out. And Ethan had finally found peace.
He knew there would be more challenges. More fights. More battles. But he was ready for them.
Because he had people who believed in him. People who loved him. People who would stand by him no matter what.
And that was enough.
