The rain hammered against the windshield like a warning.
Ethan sat in his car, parked across the street from Cross Holdings Tower. The glass monolith rose into the gray sky, reflecting nothing but clouds. Behind those windows, Julian Cross was sipping his morning coffee, reading his financial reports, pretending the world was his to command.
Sophia was beside him, her breath fogging the window. "You can't just walk in there. He'll have you arrested. Or worse."
"I don't care."
"Ethan, listen to me. My father died because he got too close to Julian Cross. I won't let you make the same mistake."
Ethan turned to look at her. Her eyes were wet, but her jaw was set. She was terrified, but she wasn't backing down.
"Your father died because he was trying to expose the truth," Ethan said. "I'm going to finish what he started."
He opened the door and stepped out into the rain. Sophia followed, her footsteps splashing in the puddles.
The Cross Holdings lobby was a cathedral of glass and chrome. Security guards stood at every entrance, their eyes scanning the crowd. Ethan walked past them with the confidence of a man who belonged there.
He didn't.
"Sir, can I help you?" A security guard stepped in front of him, his hand resting on his belt.
"I'm here to see Julian Cross."
"Do you have an appointment?"
"No. But I think he'll want to see me." Ethan pulled out the photograph—the image of Julian Cross and the builder—and held it up. "Tell him I have something he lost."
The guard's eyes flickered. He reached for his radio.
"Wait here."
Ethan waited. Sophia stood beside him, her hands trembling. The seconds stretched into minutes.
Then the guard returned. "Mr. Cross will see you. Follow me."
The elevator ride to the top floor was silent. The doors opened onto a vast penthouse office, the walls lined with books and art, the floor polished to a mirror shine. Julian Cross stood by the window, his back to them, surveying the city like a king surveying his kingdom.
He turned as they entered. His face was calm, pleasant, the face of a man who had never known fear.
"Ethan Cole." Julian's voice was smooth, cultured. "I was wondering when you'd finally come to see me."
"You knew I was coming."
"I knew you'd find your way here eventually. You always were a stubborn one." Julian gestured to the chairs in front of his desk. "Please. Sit."
Ethan didn't sit. He stood, the photograph clutched in his hand.
"I know about the fire," he said. "I know you started it. I know Derek Shaw helped you. And I know you've been covering it up for ten years."
Julian's smile didn't waver. "That's quite an accusation."
"It's not an accusation. It's the truth. And I have the evidence to prove it."
Julian walked to his desk and sat down, folding his hands in front of him. "You have a ledger. A few photographs. The word of a frightened morgue technician and a washed-up reporter." He shook his head. "That's not evidence. That's a collection of pieces that don't fit together."
"Then why are you afraid?"
"I'm not afraid, Ethan. I'm curious. You've been investigating me for ten years, and you still don't understand what you're dealing with."
"I understand perfectly. You're a murderer. You killed Alex Chen. You killed Stanley Morrison. You killed everyone who got in your way."
Julian's smile faded. "Stanley Morrison was killed by a serial killer. The police are investigating. I have nothing to do with it."
"The Watcher is working for you. He's been exposing the conspiracy to force me to face the truth."
"The Watcher is working for me?" Julian laughed. It was a cold, hollow sound. "Ethan, you have no idea what you're talking about. The Watcher is not my ally. He's my enemy. He's been trying to destroy me for years."
Ethan's mind raced. "That's a lie."
"It's the truth. The Watcher is a former associate of mine. Someone who worked for me, who knew my secrets. He's using you to get to me."
"Why? Why would he use me?"
"Because you're the only person who can bring me down." Julian leaned forward, his eyes boring into Ethan's. "You have the reputation, the credibility, the obsession. And you have nothing left to lose. The Watcher knew that. He's been manipulating you from the beginning."
Ethan's blood ran cold. The Watcher had been guiding him, pushing him, forcing him to uncover the truth. But had he been using him? Had he been a pawn all along?
"I don't believe you," Ethan said.
"Then ask yourself this: why hasn't The Watcher killed Derek Shaw? He knows where he is. He knows everything. But he hasn't touched him. He's waiting. He's waiting for you to do it."
Ethan's mind spun. The Watcher had told him he was going to kill the builder. But he hadn't done it yet. He was waiting. Waiting for Ethan to take the final step.
"You're trying to manipulate me," Ethan said. "You're trying to turn me against him."
"I'm trying to save you. The Watcher is dangerous, Ethan. He's not your ally. He's not your friend. He's using you to destroy me, and once I'm gone, he'll destroy you too."
Sophia stepped forward, her voice fierce. "My father trusted you. He believed in you. And you murdered him."
Julian looked at her, his expression unreadable. "Sophia Chen. You have your father's eyes. And his stubbornness." He leaned back in his chair. "I'm sorry about your father. He was a good man. He was trying to do the right thing. But he was wrong about me."
"He was right about everything."
"He was right about the corruption. He was right about the conspiracy. But he was wrong about who was behind it." Julian's eyes flickered to Ethan. "I'm not the mastermind, Ethan. I'm a player. A significant player, but not the architect. There's someone else. Someone who's been pulling the strings from the beginning."
"Who?"
Julian smiled. "That's the question, isn't it? Who benefits from all of this? Who benefits from the corruption, the fire, the cover-up? Who benefits from me being exposed and destroyed?"
Ethan thought. The pieces were there, but they didn't fit together. The conspiracy had been built over years. It had layers. Players. Motives.
"The builder," Ethan said. "Derek Shaw. He's the architect."
"Derek Shaw is an enforcer. A weapon." Julian shook his head. "The architect is someone else. Someone who's been working in the shadows for decades. Someone who's been using all of us."
"Who is it?"
Julian's eyes were cold, calculating. "I'll tell you. But only if you make me a promise."
Ethan tensed. "What promise?"
"When you find the architect, you don't kill him. You bring him to me. He owes me a debt. And I intend to collect."
Ethan stared at him. Julian Cross was a monster. But he was also a tool. A weapon that could be pointed at the true enemy.
"I won't promise anything," Ethan said. "But I'll consider it."
Julian nodded. "That's all I can ask."
He stood and walked to a bookshelf, pulling out a hidden safe. He entered the combination and removed a file.
"This is everything I know about the architect. His name, his history, his network. I've been collecting it for years, waiting for the right moment to use it."
He handed the file to Ethan. It was thick, filled with documents and photographs.
"Don't open it here," Julian said. "Read it somewhere safe. And when you're done, you'll understand everything."
Ethan took the file. His hands were shaking.
"Why are you giving this to me?" he asked. "Why are you helping me?"
"Because I'm tired of being controlled. I'm tired of being a pawn. I want the truth as much as you do."
Ethan looked at the file. It was heavy, dense with information. The key to everything.
"Thank you," he said.
"Don't thank me yet. The truth is a weapon, Ethan. And weapons are dangerous in the wrong hands."
Ethan turned and walked out, Sophia close behind him. The elevator doors closed, and Julian Cross's face disappeared.
Sophia grabbed Ethan's arm. "You don't actually believe him, do you?"
"I don't know what to believe. But if he's telling the truth, there's someone else behind this. Someone who's been pulling the strings from the beginning."
"And if he's lying?"
"Then he's still the enemy. But at least I'll know."
They walked out of the Cross Holdings building and into the rain. The file was tucked under Ethan's arm, a weight that felt like both hope and danger.
Ava was waiting for them in the parking garage, her face pale with worry.
"What happened?" she asked. "I saw you go in. I thought you were going to get yourself killed."
"I got the truth." Ethan held up the file. "Or at least, I got part of it."
Ava stared at the file. "What is that?"
"Everything Julian Cross knows about the conspiracy. The players, the network, the architect."
Ava's face went pale. "The architect?"
"Someone behind it all. Someone who's been controlling Julian Cross and Derek Shaw from the shadows."
Ava was silent for a moment. Then she said, "There's something I need to tell you."
"I know. You've been investigating on your own. You've been hiding things from me."
Ava's eyes met his. "I was trying to protect you."
"I don't need protection. I need the truth."
Ava nodded. "Then come to my apartment. I'll show you everything."
They drove to Ava's apartment in silence. The file sat on Ethan's lap, a ticking time bomb of information.
Ava's apartment was small, cluttered with files and computers. She led them to the living room and pulled out a box, filled with documents and photographs.
"I've been investigating the conspiracy for years," she said. "I've been tracking the money, the connections, the players. And I found something. Something that connects all of them."
She pulled out a photograph. It showed a group of men in suits, standing in front of a building Ethan recognized.
The King's Gambit building.
"This is a meeting that took place ten years ago," Ava said. "The men in this photograph are the players behind the conspiracy. Julian Cross, Derek Shaw, and the architect."
Ethan studied the photograph. There were five men in the image. Julian Cross was there. Derek Shaw was there. But the others were unfamiliar.
"Who are they?" Ethan asked.
Ava pointed to the man in the center. "That's the architect."
Ethan looked at the face. It was familiar, but he couldn't place it.
"Who is he?"
"He's someone who's been watching you for a long time, Ethan. Someone you trust. Someone who's been manipulating you from the beginning."
Ethan's blood ran cold. "That's impossible."
"It's true. I found the evidence. His name is Andrew Pierce. Your mentor."
Ethan stared at the photograph. Andrew Pierce. The man who had taught him everything he knew. The man who had given him the journal, who had sent him after Mark Hollister, who had told him to find the truth.
The architect. The man who had started it all.
"No," Ethan said. "No, that's not true. Andrew is my mentor. He's been helping me."
"Andrew has been using you," Ava said. "He's been pulling the strings from the beginning. He orchestrated the fire. He orchestrated the conspiracy. And he's been using you to destroy his enemies."
Ethan's mind raced. Andrew Pierce had been his mentor, his friend, his ally. But he'd also been the one who'd pushed him to investigate the corruption case. He'd been the one who'd encouraged him to dig deeper. He'd been the one who'd convinced him that Julian Cross was the mastermind.
It had all been a lie.
"I trusted him," Ethan said. "I trusted him with everything."
"He played you from the beginning. He wanted you to believe Julian Cross was the only enemy. He wanted you to destroy Cross so he could step in and take control."
Ethan closed his eyes. The weight of the betrayal was crushing. Andrew Pierce had been his mentor, his guide, his friend. And he'd been using him all along.
"I'm going to find him," Ethan said. "I'm going to confront him. And I'm going to make him pay."
Ava grabbed his arm. "Not yet. We need to be smart about this. We need to gather more evidence. We need to make sure we have everything before we move."
Ethan pulled away. "He's been controlling my life for ten years. He's been manipulating me, using me, destroying everything I care about. I'm not going to wait."
He grabbed the file and walked to the door. Sophia followed him, her face pale.
"Ethan, wait!" Ava called after him. "You're going to get yourself killed."
"Maybe. But at least I'll die knowing the truth."
He walked out into the rain, the file clutched to his chest. The city was dark, the streets empty. Somewhere in the shadows, Andrew Pierce was watching, waiting.
And Ethan was going to find him.
