Rosemary stepped forward. She knew she needed to do something. This wasn't how she planned the evening to go.
And what baffled her most was where the hell did Rubyrose get that dress from?
Rosemary clenched her hands tightly into fists by her sides.
All these years Rosemary had succeeded in making Rubyrose feel insecure. When they were little, Rubyrose started gaining extra weight. At first Rosemary was happy Rubyrose was getting fat, but as they kept growing, she realized Rubyrose wasn't getting fat but rather, she was gaining additional weight in the areas that could draw men in like flies.
Rosemary had been jealous and she felt insecure in her own body. Although she was beautiful, her body was no match for Rubyrose's. When she discovered Rubyrose was in love with the Alpha of Stormhowl pack, she decided to use that to her advantage knowing the kind of personality Rubyrose had.
She had told Rubyrose that Max thought she was fat. Rubyrose had cried and wished she had the kind of body Rosemary had, at least Max wouldn't think she was fat.
Rosemary had suggested to her that since there was nothing she could do to change her fat shape, she could at least hide it. She went ahead to initiate the idea of wearing bigger dresses. According to Rosemary; the dress would hide her body type and no one would actually know what she looked like underneath those dresses.
Rubyrose, eager to get Max's attention did what Rosemary suggested but Rosemary didn't stop there, she went to their friends and told them Rubyrose had gotten fat and was trying to hide it and that was when the bullying started.
Knowing how weak in heart Rubyrose is, Rosemary told her it was Max who had told everyone that she was fat and disgusting, and not fit to be by his side. That had actually triggered her first suicide attempt when she had almost drowned herself because she felt ashamed and hated her body.
As the bullying kept coming in, soon Rubyrose started believing she was actually fat and never stopped wearing those big dresses with the hope that one day everyone would actually forget what she looked like underneath those dresses.
Hence Rosemary's shock today when she had seen her walk in with all her curves in display.
Where the hell did she get the confidence to wear such?
Not only had she succeeded in getting the attention of every man in the hall like Rosemary had always feared, but the Supreme Alpha also seemed interested in her.
How could she turn out to be his mate?
No.
She couldn't sit back and let that happen.
She would rather be the supreme Luna than let Rubyrose claim that title.
A sly grin appeared on her face as a thought came into her mind.
She knelt before Kieran, her head bowed, her lips quivering as her eyes teared up.
“Supreme Alpha Kieran, I know you might not know this, and I'm not happy or proud to say this either, but my sister… She… she is mentally unstable right now. You… you might want to have a rethink on claiming her as your mate.”
Hushed silence fell in the hall immediately.
Kieran’s face held no expression as he stared down at Rosemary. “A rethink? Are you saying the moon goddess made a mistake?”
Rosemary shook her head immediately. “No. Please listen. Giving Rubyrose to you would be an insult to your status and to your pack.”
“Insult?” Keiran leaned forward slightly, his voice dropping dangerously low. “Do you dare to call my mate an insult?”
He could have had her thrown out then, but he wanted her to face the same humiliation he was sure she had always made Rubyrose face. He had waited for a day like this.
The hall went silent. Rosemary could hear the pounding of her own heart. She swallowed hard but lifted her chin, still desperate to trample on the dignity of Rubyrose.
Alpha Kieran's presence loomed over her. “An insult?” he repeated, his face darkening. “The only insult here is your audacity to stand before me and slander my mate.”
Rosemary's face paled, but she wasn't giving up. “She… she’s unstable. Everyone here knows it. I can even bring the doctor’s records if you—”
“Enough!” Kieran growled, his wolf, Eros, scratching at the surface. His voice instantly shutting Rosemary up. She flinched and shrunk back.
“Let me make this crystal clear,” Kieran growled, his voice dripping with disdain. “Rubyrose is my mate. My only mate. I’d sooner tear this pack apart than let anyone—and I mean anyone—come between us. And you? You’re not even a speck of dust in her shadow. You’re nothing but a jealous, conniving fool who can’t stand that Rubyrose is everything you’ll never be.”
Rosemary’s face flushed red from anger and humiliation, her hands clenched into fists. She blurted out before she could stop herself. “But she’s not fit for you!” she spat, desperation creeping into her voice. “She’s not strong enough for you! She… she’ll ruin you!”
Kieran laughed again, the sound cold and cruel. “Ruin me? The only thing ruining this moment is your presence. Get out of my sight before I decide you’re not worth the air you’re breathing.”
Rosemary froze, her bravado shattered. She bowed her head before his feet, ketowing. “I mean no disrespect, Supreme Alpha Kieran. I only wish to spare you from disgrace. All I want is what's best for you. Rubyrose can’t handle the responsibilities of being your mate. But I…” she choked, her trembling fingers clutching her dress as she forced out tears from her eyes like she was being wronged.
“I…I could take my sister's place for now, until she's better. I’m strong, capable, and I’d honor you as your mate should.”
“What are you saying Rosemary, are you out of your mind?” Max spoke through gritted teeth.
Murmurs rippled through the crowd, but not loud enough for their words to be heard.
Rosemary ignored Max. After all, minutes ago he had ignored her and was lusting over that b***h. If she could get the Supreme Alpha's attention, then what would she need Max for? Being with him won't make her the Supreme Luna. Only the Supreme Alpha can bestow that title to whomever he chooses.
She couldn't let such power fall into the hands of Rubyrose. She's not worthy.
The laugh that came out from Kieran was cold, sharp and dark. “You?” his eyes raked over her, slowly. “ Replace her? I have searched for my mate for years. Do you think I would trade her for trash that begs at my feet?”
Rosemary felt the ground should open up and swallow her whole. How could she be compared to Rubyrose as trash?
Kieran took a step closer, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper. “You dare to offer yourself when you’re not even fit to kiss the ground she walks on? You’re a scheming, opportunistic leech, Rosemary, and I can smell your deceit from a mile away.”
Gasps echoed through the hall.
Rosemary squirmed under the weight of Kieran's stare. She had never felt this humiliated before. Her hands curled into tighter fists.
It's all because of that b***h, Rubyrose.
Kieran turned to stare at Rubyrose, his heart skipped a beat.
The first time he had laid eyes on her, she had moved around like a whispered promise.
Her steps were confident and unhurried
He thought the goddess had slipped into a mortal form just to torture him.
It was as if she was utterly unaware of the chaos that she left in her wake.
And now?
Now he knew—she was his all along.
Her hair was a wild cascade of copper fire that caught the dying sunlight.
It was like it was made to burn.
Each wave and tendril framed a face that could silence any sort of war.
Her full lips were pushed into a natural pout that begged for secrets.
It begged for sins, and surrender.
And those eyes…
Goddess, those forest green orbs that were flecked with gold nearly undid him.
They had once looked straight through him even before the bond awakened.
And his heart had tightened.
He had wanted her then.
But, he had held back.
Tonight, she was wearing a black dress that wrapped around her as if it owed her everything.
It was tight enough to honor every soft dip and curve that was her body. Her breast rose with every breath she took, causing his pulse to throb at the sight.
Her waist drew in before spilling into hips that could drive a man insane, the kind you wanted to grip, to pull closer until there was no space left between you two. His thoughts turned reckless, imagining how those curves would feel under his palms.
It was accentuating enough to make any man’s imagination to beg for mercy.
Heat coiled low in his gut, rough and undeniable.
Damnit.
She wasn’t just beautiful. She was temptation itself.
Despite those hideous dresses she wore, he knew her.
For months, he has watched from the shadows without a sound.
And she had quickly become a woman he could admire from afar.
But when their eyes had locked tonight, he had really felt that shift in the air.
The bond had snapped into place and caused his chest to feel so tight.
Then, he knew.
She was his mate.
And now that he knew about that, there would be no turning back from here.
She was his forever.
And she has no idea what she had just unlocked deep inside of him.
But he had a feeling that she would soon.
She would know everything.
Even if her heart belongs to another, he would do everything within his power to make that heart completely beat for him alone.
“Unless…” he said softly, his gaze still fixed on Rubyrose. “...she rejects me herself — denies the bond we both share.”
Rubyrose's heart somersaulted under his gaze. Her mouth opened. “I…I—”
Rosemary's eyes lifted, hope flickering as she turned and glared at Rubyrose, cutting her off sharply. “Rubyrose, tell him. Tell him you’re not fit for this. Reject the bond before you disgrace our family further!”
“Shut up!” Kieran growled, his cold aura chilling the room, causing Rosemary to shrink back. Her bickering was already getting on his nerves and his patience with her was wearing thin.
All he wanted was to hear Rubyrose speak.
He turned away from Rosemary, his focus shifting entirely to Rubyrose.
His Mate.
He could feel the bond pulse stronger, a warmth that steadied him. “Ruby,” he sa
id gently, a stark contrast to the venom he had just unleashed.
He reached for her hand but stopped short, giving her space.
“Do you want to reject the mate bond between us?”
