“Damnit Eros, what was that for?” I asked my wolf as I slid into my car, slamming the door harder than I meant to. My chest still burned from that kiss.
“You can't blame me Kieran, we've waited for so long. It was difficult for you too wasn't it?”
I kept silent for a second because he was right. It was difficult pulling away when all we wanted—no, all we ached for— was to claim her right there and then… it nearly tore me apart.
Being the Supreme Alpha isn't just because we're more powerful. It's because we're from an ancient line of wolves—can’t even remember how long we've lived.
Most of us aren't lucky to find our Fated mate—sometimes we just choose a mate to help satisfy our s****l urges and help organize the pack.
But Eros and I had made a pact—we won't give our body to anyone except our mate.
To make that a reality, we've engrossed ourselves in battles and pack meetings, barely having time to spare a lady a glance, coupled with the rumors surrounding my rule about me being too ruthless, too cold, too merciless — many ladies tend to back off.
“Do you think she's scared of us?” Eros asked.
“She accepted us, didn't she?” I answered, taking out my tabloids to check if there's any work to be done—anything to get my mind off her.”
Eros chuckled.
“What?” I asked, dropping the tabloids for a second.
“The same woman you've been praying to the moon goddess for years to make her your mate — the same woman you were willing to break our pact with and claim her as your chosen mate if she didn't turn out to be your mate, is who you want to get out of your mind? Especially now that the moon goddess has answered your prayers? Tsk.”
“So what are you driving at?” I sneered.
“Should we place a bet?”
I narrowed my eyes, “What bet?”
“You won't be able to sleep tonight and you will find yourself at the Moonveil pack before dawn,”
I couldn't help but laugh. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
“No one knows you better than me, Kieran, this is just the start of you doing ridiculous things—-again.”
I snorted and ignored him. I tried hard not to think about her but my mind couldn't help but betray me.
My mind drifted to the first time I had met her — that should be five years ago.
I was in my weakened state, a state known by only members of my trusted inner circle. Even as a very powerful supernatural being, I have my weaknesses. After the full moon, Eros gets weak and I'm more or less a human at that moment—a weak human to be precise.
This little piece of information is one that could ruin me if it gets to the ears of the wrong people.
I had a secret cave I go to at such moments—not really in my pack though. There, I'm not the Supreme Alpha but just a person… just Kieran. No mask. No title. No responsibilities. Even if it's actually for a day—I get to actually breathe.
I had stumbled into the cave that morning when I noticed my secret place had been invaded. I was about to secretly retreat when I saw a figure curled up into a ball, her copper hair falling down her back to her waist and her shoulder shaking vigorously, a clear sign she was crying.
Something twisted in my gut and I came closer. She seemed to notice my presence and immediately lifted her head, and that's when I saw it.
Those innocent endless green eyes, staring at me, and for once— I forgot to breathe.
I forgot she was a stranger and that for the first time, someone other than my trusted inner circle was seeing me without my mask on.
I forgot I never wanted to get close to any woman other than my mate. At that moment, the world narrowed to just her.
She had looked surprised to see me, I didn't blame her though, this cave was well hidden and not easy to find. I had wondered how she even found it in the first place.
We stared at each other for a while like two people who had forgotten how to speak.
My eyes ran down her body. Goddess forgive me, but she had a body that could make a man let go of every restraint — a body that could make a saint commit sin and not regret it.
To cut the long story short, at the end of that day, I found myself attracted to her, not just sexually, but she was different and special from every woman I had come across since my long existence. She thought I was human and related to me as one. Her smiles were soft and genuine. Her voice was a sweet melody, soothing my heavy heart.
That day turned out to be the best in my history of isolation. I even foolishly went back to the cave the next day with high hopes of finding her but she didn't come. Neither did she come the day after or the following day after that.
I was disappointed and had to send Ivan my Beta to find out about her, and that was when I discovered she was the daughter of Alpha Logan of Moonveil pack and that she was in love with Max.
“You mean your cousin,” Eros teased.
“Distant cousin,” I hissed at him.
“What's the difference?” he asked.
“We've no close relationship,” I growled at him.
“If you say so,” he replied in mock surrender.
“But you know what’s funny?” he added slyly. “Just as you went back to the cave years back, looking for her despite knowing how foolish and risky it was, that's how you will go back to the Moonveil pack today. Mark my words.”
I didn't respond to him. As much as he sounded ridiculous and I wanted to deny it… for some unknown reason, I feared he might be right —- especially now I know she was mated to me. I could also feel Eros' excitement.
The next full moon is definitely going to be the longest, most torturous wait of my life.
That's if I could wait that long.
