Chapter 15: The Thing

1225 Words
“Ahhh!!!” I screamed, startled as I opened my eyes to see a couple of strange ladies in maids' uniform staring at me. “Who…who are you all?” I stuttered, my heart racing. “Good evening, Luna,” they all chorused, bowing their heads. Luna? Wait, did I just hear evening? I turned my head sharply to the window where a small light streamed from—it was warm, not bright. Shit. Did I sleep through the day? I raised my gaze to see that the ladies were all staring at me with some eagerness in their eyes. Their eyes all spoke of tiredness. I noticed that the feet of one of them was slightly trembling, and her face was pale as if she could pass out at any time. What's going on? “What's wrong with her?” I asked no one in particular, pointing at her. The others followed my gaze and pointed finger and immediately the maid collapsed on her feet, bowing and crying? “I'm sorry, Luna. Please forgive me, I'm sorry.” What the hell? Everything was confusing to me. Who are these people and what did she do that needed my forgiveness?” “What…what's going on here?” My gaze moved to the lady who looked older, and seeing her stance, I figured she's the head of them. “The Supreme Alpha asked us to attend to you and to your every need and make sure you're comfortable.” The Supreme Alpha? Kieran? So it wasn't a dream. I was actually brought here by him. But still, it doesn't explain what's going on before me. Why does she need my forgiveness when I've only just arrived last night, and obviously I was just waking up. “And what does it have to do with her? Why does she look like she has seen a ghost? How did she offend me?” The questions in my heart rolled out from my mouth one after the other. The head maid sighed, her voice low, her head slightly bowed. “Nancy got tired after standing all morning waiting for you to wake up.” My eyes widened. “What?!” “I'm…I'm so sorry Luna,” Nancy cried, trying to get back again on her feet. I quickly stood up, running to her as I held her down. “No, no, you misunderstood me. I didn't shout because I'm offended you fell down. I…I was only startled you had been on your feet all day.” “Why? What's going on? Why are you all standing and waiting for me?” My gaze moved across all eight of them, and I could clearly see the tiredness in their eyes, and if they had been here all morning, that means they hadn't eaten since. “We…we brought in the collections the Supreme Alpha asked for but you were sleeping so peacefully, we…we couldn't wake you—we wouldn't dare.” My mouth opened and then shut back. It opened again and shut itself. I was trying to grasp what she had just said. Was this how they behave in this place? This was so absurd. Finally I brought myself to ask after finding my voice again. “What collection are you talking about?” my voice was low from shock—first, I slept through the day, nothing of such had ever happened. Next, there were people who had been on their feet waiting for me to wake up. I wonder what the next line of shock the day had for me was— but I guess I didn't have to wait long to find out. The head of the maids turned, her gaze brightening as she stretched her hands, pointing towards something. My eyes widened like it wanted to bulge out of its socket. Startled by what I saw after waking up, I hadn't even noticed the dozens of rails that were in one corner of the room. It felt like a mini luxury boutique. Different collections of exotic wears and accessories, each pair costing a fortune. I walked slowly towards them, running my fingers through each of them, the ladies following closely behind me. The tiredness seemed to have left them as they were all suddenly excited to show me what they had picked out. I noticed a rail containing just lingeries in different styles, colors and designs. How did they manage to pick out my exact sizes? “The Supreme Alpha personally picked out all these for you,” the head of the maids said, a soft smile playing on her face and eyes as if she had just read my thoughts. At that moment, my hands dropped from the lingerie I was admiring. “What?!” She bowed softly again. “He said if you don't like any of the things he had picked for you, then we should give him feedback so he would change them—or get more if these ones are not enough. My face instantly heated up from embarrassment. “Ki…Kieran personally handpicked all these?” I stuttered, my stomach tightening. She nodded her head. My throat felt tight. Even while I was married to Max, he never got my dress or shoe sizes right, it's either they were too small or bigger than me. So how's it possible that someone I just met yesterday… my gaze dropped to the lingeries again— there was nothing decent about them. My face got hotter. Pervert. That was the only name that came to my mind immediately. Kieran is a pervert. I immediately dismissed the maids, they hesitated but I told them I was good and would give Kieran my feedback myself. By the time they had left, I was surrounded by racks of so many different luxury clothes and hell, I couldn't wear them all in a year even if I wear 10 different pieces daily. The scent of new fabric filled the room and it felt like I was in a walk-in closet. At that moment, my stomach growled, reminding me that I needed to eat something. I quickly freshened up and made my way downstairs. The halls were quiet except for the faint hum of crickets outside. As I made my way downstairs, my bare feet brushed softly against the polished floor. The mansion glowed in gold rays from the warm light of the sunset. Everything about this place screamed power, luxury, wealth and Kieran. I followed the soft sounds of some voices before I got to the living room. But he wasn’t there. Rather a familiar woman stood by the fireplace, a cup of tea in hand. She was dressed so elegantly she could be mistaken for the Luna. Her hair was styled to perfection, her skin like milk. I wore a polite smile as I approached her. “I didn’t get to introduce myself yesterday. I’m Rubyrose,” I said, my voice soft and polite. The woman turned her head lazily, as though my voice had interrupted something very important she had been doing. Her eyes traveled from my messy hair down to my toes. She didn’t hide the disgust on her face, and I saw the cold smirk that played on her lips. “I know who you are...the thing Kieran introduced as his Luna yesterday.”
