The whole air in the hall instantly changed. Everyone dropped to their knees except Rubyrose. She couldn't move. Her heart was beating so loud she felt anyone who listened carefully could hear it. Her breath ceased, her mouth fell open as she beheld the man walking towards her.
If Max was handsome and powerful, then he was only a pretender before this guy.
This man exudes the aura of a god.
He reeks of ancient power and dominance.
A dark mask covered half of his face but that did nothing to hide those cold, piercing golden-hazel eyes that made it impossible to look away as they locked unto hers. His dark curls tumble carelessly over his forehead. His jawline was sharp, dusted with the faintest shadow of stubble, her fingers twitched, feeling the itch to trace it.
Rubyrose’s gaze went lower, landing on those full and maddening lips that seemed like it was designed for both sin and salvation.
The kind of aura he exuded wasn't one of a man who just walked into a place—bur one who claims it. She immediately knew one thing for sure: he wasn't meant to be admired.
He was meant to be feared.
But strangely, as she beheld those eyes, all she felt was insane desire.
Mine.
His footsteps stopped right in front of her, his gaze not leaving hers, his scent doing nothing to calm her racing heart.
Then his voice that's like thunder wrapped in silk spoke to her.
“MATE.”
The Supreme Alpha, Kieran Blackthorne growled loudly.
Rubyrose felt the mate bond with Kieran burning stronger than anything she had ever experienced with Max. It was like there was something crawling underneath her skin, screaming to be set free.
The bond burned hotter, deeper, stronger. It was fire and lightning running through my veins, setting every nerve on fire.
And before she even realized it, the same word slipped from her lips, raw and unbidden.
“MATE.”
Gasps tore through the crowd, shock rippling like wildfire. But no one spoke, they didn't even dare murmur.
The Supreme Alpha—Kieran Blackthorne—turned, his satisfied eyes blazing with power as he commanded everyone in the hall, “Rise.”
Every single wolf in the hall obeyed without question, their bodies trembling as they stood before him. His presence was suffocating, overwhelming, a force of nature that made even breathing difficult.
At that moment, Alpha Max Sexton looked small. Like a boy wearing a crown that didn’t belong to him.
Kieran’s gaze never left Rubyrose when he spoke again, his words echoing like a decree of fate.
“Rubyrose Logan is mine. My mate.”
What? Rosemary was shocked to her bones. Her hands clenched into tight fists. How's that even possible? Though the rumors surrounding the supreme Alpha were dark and nothing good. But still, she couldn't let him claim Rubyrose. That will instantly make her the Supreme Luna, heightening her status and making her more powerful.
No. She couldn't let that happen.
She bit her lips and tugged on Max's sleeve.
Max didn't even notice the touch. His gaze was fiercely fixed on Rubyrose whose eyes were fixed on Alpha Kieran.
The sight stirred his blood like bitter water.
“No!” Max voice tore through the hall, his face twisted with fury, his voice shaking with desperation. “She was mine first! She belongs to me! Rubyrose is my mate not yours!”
The crowd erupted in low whispers, stunned beyond belief. Rubyrose pulse thundered in her ears, her chest rising and falling too quickly as she tried to make sense of what's going on.
Kieran turned his head slowly towards him, his hazel eyes narrowing, glowing faintly and dangerous.
“Belong?”
Then a cold dark laugh escaped him, freezing the air in the hall. Everyone held their breath.
Then his voice dropped low, his eyes like that of a predator closing in on his prey. “Bless the goddess you used the word “was”. Rejected bonds mean nothing. You cast her aside, Alpha Sexton. You asked your… scratch that. My mate, to be a breeder to you and your mistress,” his gaze fell coldly and disgustingly on Rosemary and she shrinked. “And the entire pack bore witness to that. She rejected your bond so she's no longer yours to claim.”
Silence crashed over everybody like a tidal wave. Not even the whisper of a breath dared break it.
Max clenched his fists, his teeth grinding together, but he couldn't retort. He knew he was no match for the Supreme Alpha.
But at least there was still someone he had power over. He turned to Rubyrose.
“Rubyrose, tell him. Tell the Supreme Alpha the truth. Tell him I'm the only man your heart belongs to.” his voice was desperate now.
The air in the room immediately turned chilly, freezing the bones of everyone as they trembled under the dark aura released by the Supreme Alpha.
“Take your gaze off my Mate Sexton, if you don't want me to gouge those eyes out.” his wolf growled on the surface and Max knew It wasn't just a threat.
He slowly lowered his eyes, his fists tightly clenched as he realized how powerless he was before Kieran.
Rubyrose’s parents exchanged a glance, their faces pale. Her mother’s hands trembled, clutching her gown, while her father’s jaw tightened. Terror warred with hope at the unexpected bond. To have the Supreme Alpha as their daughter’s mate… it was unthinkable. Unreachable. Having the Supreme Alpha as a son-in-law would certainly elevate their status.
To rise that high meant power, protection, glory.
But Kieran Blackthorne was not a man to be loved. His reputation was as dark as the shadows that seemed to follow him. He was feared. Ruthless. Known for breaking armies with a single command, for tearing Alphas apart without mercy.
They feared their daughter might not have a smooth life as his mate.
But he was the most powerful werewolf alive. A predator no one dared to cross.
Rubyrose’s lips trembled. Her heart raced so fast it scared her. Max had once killed her. Betrayed her.
But this man—Kieran Blackthorne—just by standing there, his unyielding gaze pinning her in place, she knew one terrifying thing.
If Max had ruined her life once…
Kieran had the power to burn it to the ground.
