Chapter 8: Mate

2096 Words
My heart stopped. I couldn't breathe when I saw him again. The man standing before me was the same man who had murdered me. The same man I swore I would destroy if I ever got another chance. And now here he was. Alive. Breathing. Looking right at me. Max was also a werewolf? The world seemed to freeze when our eyes met. His stare burned into me, sharp, hungry and most of all… dangerous. My chest tightened, and before I even knew what I was doing, the word tore from my lips beyond my control at the same time as his. “Mate.” The sound of it shocked me. My hand flew to my mouth. Why did I say that? He stiffened, nostrils flaring as if he’d just found treasure. But I was stuck in my own confusion, my mind racing. Why's my body reacting this way? Why's my heart beating so fast? What's happening to me? Gasps rippled through the crowd. “She’s his mate?” someone whispered. “No way—Alpha Max Sexton of Stormhowl pack? With her?” another muttered. “What about Rosemary? Thought she was going to be his mate?” “How could he be mated to wolfless Rubyrose?” “Will Alpha Max reject his mate for Rosemary?” “The Moon Goddess has bound them…” Mate? Bound them? My stomach dropped as realization trickled in from their whispers. That word “Mate”… it wasn’t just a word. It meant a bond. A connection. My heart lurched violently in my chest, not from joy but from rage. Him? The man who had once killed me? I'm bonded to this monster? This…this devil?! My chest heaved, my eyes blinded by rage, and for a moment, I forgot I wasn't Amaris anymore. I forgot I was in a different world. In his world. I lunged at him screaming at the top of my lungs as I threw myself on him. He wasn't expecting that reaction as he lost his balance and fell to the ground. I heard gasps around me but I didn't care. All I wanted was to kill him. To give him back the same pain he had given me. My fingers wrapped around his throat before he could even blink. “You bastard!” I screamed, squeezing with everything in me. “You don’t deserve to breathe!” “Rubyrose!” My mother’s voice broke through the noise. She had entered the hall a few minutes ago with my father. She ran forward, horrified. “What are you doing? Stop this madness!” Strong hands grabbed me from behind, dragging me away. I fought against them, kicking and thrashing, trying to claw my way back to him. “Let me go! Let me finish him!” I kept shouting. Something flashed in Max's eyes as he was helped up from the ground. Was he angry? Embarrassed? I don't even care. The fact he's still alive while my body is lying cold dead somewhere is what clouded my judgement. His face twisted into an evil smirk as he stared at me. God, all I wanted to do was hit him hard on the face and wipe off that good-for-nothing smirk he had on. My hands twitched and clenched by my sides. But then I realized something — this is a werewolf world and Max happens to be an Alpha. My eyes raked around the people surrounding him. They all stared at me dangerously as if daring me to touch their Alpha again. In that moment, I knew I couldn't do anything to Max — at least not yet. My chest heaved painfully from that realization. But at least there's something I can do. “No! I do not accept you as my mate!” I blurted out, my eyes blazing with fury as I locked gaze with him. I couldn't be blessed with a second chance and let myself get tied down to this devil because of some barbaric mate bond. “What?” Gasps and whispers filled everywhere again. “Is she out of her mind?” “Hasn't she always wanted the Alpha?” “Everyone knows she has chased him.” I could hear the gasps and whispers from the crowd. I could see the confused and furious look on Max's face. “Ruby,” he growled through gritted teeth, then his voice lowered as if he was trying to control his emotions. “You don't mean that.” I raised my chin and stared at him square in the eyes. “I mean every word I just said, Al-pha Max s*x-ton,” I laid out the sentence word for word. The crowd erupted in more murmurs but I don't care. This is my life. This is my destiny. I'm going to end this stupid mate bond before it even gets started. “And Al-pha Max?” I said, stepping closer, boldly, to him. “It's Rubyrose. You haven't earned the right to call me Ruby.” I threw the last word to his face. I saw the change in his eyes, I heard the low growl rumble from his chest— I guess that might be his wolf, but funny enough, I wasn't scared. “Ruby?” My mother called out, her voice laced with worry. “That's Alpha Max, your mate. You shouldn't be doing that.” I replied to her, my gaze still fixed on Max. “Believe me mother, I should. I believe you wouldn't want your daughter to be bound to a man who's behind her death.” I spat out. “What?!” Another loud gasp escaped from the crowd. My father who had been silent all these while immediately stepped forward. “Is that true Alpha Max? You're the reason why my daughter tried to take her own life?” Max was confused, angry and embarrassed. I was loving every bit of this. He couldn't deny he didn't know Rubyrose had always been in love with him. He couldn't deny ignoring her feelings but rather chose to entangle himself with her twin sister. He couldn't deny there's a possibility Rubyrose might have committed suicide all because of him. Silence fell upon the great hall as everyone was waiting for him to answer. Finally cat got the tongue of the powerful Alpha. Coward. And just then, the sly fox decided to speak. “Mom,” “Dad,” I shut my eyes briefly and opened them again, turning my gaze to the slut and betrayer who was once my best friend but now my twin sister. “You shouldn't believe what Rubyrose is saying, remember the doctor said she's mentally unstable.” She made sure she said that last word very loud and clear for everyone in the room to hear. And as expected, loud gasps erupted and some started whispering. Max sneered darkly. “You're mentally unstable?” I knew Rosemary had intentionally said this to give him a way out. Mentally unstable? What a nice choice of word. “You should be happy and count yourself lucky if I even decide to take a mentally unstable woman as my slave.” he said it with cold pride. “Watch your mouth, son,” my father snapped, stepping forward. “Or what, Alpha Logan?” Max countered. “You know quite well that your daughter isn't in her right senses and you still questioned me?” His eyes were glowing red as he spoke and I'm guessing that's what Werewolves look like when their wolves are on the surface. “I don't want a mad, wolfless, weak, suicidal woman as my mate.” Max stretched out his hand towards Rosemary. “She's the one I want and has choosen as my mate and Luna,” Rosemary took his hand, blushing and pretending to be shy. “Alpha Max, are you sure? But my sister…” I could see my father clench his fist, fuming in anger. I'm sure he didn't like the way Max had just spoken about me. But who cares. I took his arm gently and shook my head at him with a soft reassuring smile on my face, letting him know I wasn't affected. My father exhaled weakly and took a step back. Mother broke down. “Rosemary, you can't do that to your sister,” “But I didn't do anything wrong, mother,” Rosemary protested, false tears gathering in her eyes. “Rubyrose doesn't want him,” “No, I'm the one who doesn't want her,” Max said, stepping forward. “ I Alpha Max Sexton, reject you, Rubyrose Logan as my mate.” He lifted his chin arrogantly, his eyes glinting with mischief as his lips curved into a sly grin, he lowered his voice. “I know you don't want to sever our bond. I know how much you've always wanted to get my attention, Rubyrose. Well, now you've it. So why don't you kneel down and beg— maybe… just maybe, for the sake of how beautiful you look tonight,” his gaze went dark as his eyes lustfully traveled down my body. “…I could let you be my breeder.” “Max…” Rosemary’s voice shook as she noticed how lustfully he was glaring at my full breast that was slightly exposed. Max completely ignored her. I folded my arms underneath my breast, further poking at it. Max hissed under his breath. “What do you've to say?” his voice was rough and husky. Typical Max. He didn't sound like he was asking for my opinion. He sounded more like I had no choice. I was supposed to be angry, but what came out of my mouth was a deep laughter. The laughter rolled out of me until tears gathered in my eyes. The whole hall went dead silent as all eyes were fixed on me. I stared at Max, my lips curving into a cold smirk. “I Rubyrose Logan, accept your rejection.” Max's eyes widened in shock as soon as the word left me. He groaned and stumbled backwards. I felt a small ache, but it disappeared as soon as it came. Was that all? Was the bond broken? My mother rushed over to my side. “Ruby, are you okay? Are you feeling pain anywhere?” I shook my head confused at her question. What sort of pain was I supposed to feel? And just then the whispering started again. “How's it possible she didn't feel any pain after being rejected?” “Even Alpha Max was affected by the severing of the mate bond, how could she not be?” Their voices blurred as I turned to look at the deceitful couple. One, my ex-husband and ex-mate. The other, my ex-best friend. I guess the people in this world didn't know what their alpha had done in my world. He never even mentioned his marriage to a human or how he murdered her. I could tell Max has a lot of things he was hiding and I tend to uncover them all since I've been reborn into his world. I was reborn into his world to uncover his secrets. And this time, I won't be the one in the dark. I know who he is but he doesn't actually know who I truly was. And as for Rosemary, this is just the beginning. I want her to feel every bit of betrayal I had felt. I wanted my pain to be seen by her when she's been brought down by her own twin sister. Watching both of them brought painful memories to me and I felt my eyes sting. I chuckled silently as I turned away. These two were the most important people to me once. Hell, I could do anything to protect them. But all I was to them was a stepping stone to power and wealth. Boast all you want now Max, because one day, everything you've now that belonged to me will be taken — everything you owed me — including your life. Just then, another strong scent hit me hard. If what I experienced with Max was intoxicating, this one was a whirlwind knocking the living breath out of me. The scent was soothing, healing my pain and sorrow. It smells like fresh spring and mint. It felt like clean air after a storm. “The Supreme Alpha is here, all bow,” someone shouted. I turned slowly and then I gasped.
