“Hunter,” a sultry voice called to him, “why won’t you come and play with me.”
How he hated that voice. Why couldn’t she get the hint and leave him alone. He never moved his eyes from his work as she sat on his desk, practically draping herself over his papers, her perfume coating the air making it feel thick. He could feel his wolf, Zeus, choke on her scent, growing angry by her presence, “I have work to do, Blanca.” And he finally looked up to meet her eyes he added a low growl to his voice, “and you may be Damian’s sister, but you will address me as Alpha.”
She flinched and moved away from his desk, shrinking back from his alpha tone. He hated using it, especially on his beta’s sister but he needed to get this done and she was being an annoying pest.
Come get your sister please before I hurt her. He mind-linked his Beta.
Is she bothering you again? I told her to leave you alone. He could hear the frustration through the link.
I think I just made her cry. Please help. He begged as he looked back down at his work.
Great, now I’m going to hear about how mean you are for hours. Thank a lot.
He tried not to smile at his friend’s misfortune while Blanca was still in the room, “I just thought that you were working too hard and needed a break,” she whined, “Alpha.” Putting extra emphasis on his title.
Before he could respond, Damian came through the door, glaring daggers at his sister, “Don’t you have somewhere to be?”
“I was just-,” she started, but was cut off.
“You were just leaving, we have work to do.” His voice hard as his sister glared at her brother but backed down before she stormed out, slamming the door behind her as she left.
Hunter exhaled a breath he didn’t know he was holding, her scent still in the air making him wish his office had a window, “Thank you.”
“Sorry about her, she’s still hoping that you will make her Luna even though you’re not mates.” He sighed, “I keep telling her she needs to wait for her own mate, but she doesn’t listen.”
SHE IS NOT MATE! Zeus growled.
I know and she never will be. Calm down. Hunter responded.
Damian threw himself on the sofa, his long legs stretching out as he laid back to stare at the ceiling, running his hands through his messy blonde hair.
At twenty-one, his Beta was looking a little worn out from having to raise his sister for the last three years since his parents’ death. It only got worse since his sister turned eighteen last year and was using her brother's status to flaunt authority over other pack members. Acting as if she was the Luna, which only pissed him off even more.
"You better keep her in check, Dame" he sighed, "I don't like what I'm hearing about her bossing around pack members."
His Beta groaned, "I know. Half the staff here has come to me asking me to make her stop her bitching. She doesn't listen and cries that they are all being jealous or her." He voice turned mocking towards the end.
"I could have her banished if you like" he said, his lips turned up into a smile.
Damian lifted his head slightly, staring at him with raised eyebrow, " Don’t joke about that, I might take you up on it someday."
Hunter laughed as his friend looked back at the ceiling with a groan.
“How are the boarders looking?” he asked, changing the topic.
Not even bothering to look up at him he said, “Just finished patrol and meeting with the leads and it looks like we are in good shape. No traces of wild rouges within the territory, but we did get approached by a packless family looking to join. They are in one of our holding houses while we do a background check, but it seems like they’ll clear. It is a husband, wife and two kids, twin three-year-old girls.”
“Sounds good, any idea what their old pack was?” he asked.
“Something Lake,” he shrugged, “I’ll look into it.”
Finally sitting up, Damian met his eyes, “Any luck with Black Thorne yet?”
It was his turn to sigh, “No, luck. They have no interest in dealing with us until their Alpha is able to meet in person, which won’t be for another seven months. Something about always completing deals in person and having certain events coming up on their calendar.”
“Well that sucks. What else do we need then?”
“We just have to go through the financials today and we should be caught up.” Hunter gave his Beta a folder, “You can look through the hospital budget and I’ll cover the schools. Then we can hit the pack house budget together. A little divide and conquer, sound good?”
His Beta smirked and took the folder, “Deal.” Leaning back and opening the folder he began to flip through the documents mumbling, “I can’t wait for us to find our mates and make this their problem.”
Hunter looked at him, c*****g his eyebrow, “excuse me?”
Not even looking up, “What, money dealing, charity, social events are usually handled by the Luna and Beta Female.”
When Hunter failed to respond his Beta looked up at him confused, “Am I wrong?”
He chuckled and looked back at his own file, “You’re an idiot.”
“You know I’m right.”
Hunter actually did wish he had his mate, but not for the reason his Beta said. At twenty he was already one of the youngest pack leaders, his father death early that year causing him to inherit the title earlier than he expected. The job took over everything, even looking for the other part of his soul.
------
It took them another three hours to get through everything, making sure each penny was accounted for and put to use. Being one of the largest packs in the north wasn’t easy but Hunter was determined to make it successful.
The door suddenly opened and his Gamma, Philip, came through the door. He oversaw the training of the warriors that helped protect the boarders and the pack. They had over two-thousand wolves under their command and they continued to grow. That did not include children and civilian wolves under their protection.
“Just wanted to report that are new recruits are looking good, we have a lot of promising warriors in this graduating class.” He handed him a roster of wolves that had joined the ranks after they graduated from the high school.
Another hundred names to add to his ranks, about half, maybe more would make it into warrior class, “Looks good, keep me updated.” He handed it back to him.
He sighed deeply, “You guys watch the fort? I really need some air.” Blanca’s scent still lingered and it was starting to irritate him.
“Going for a run?” his Gamma smirked.
Need to go far today. Let’s ride. Zeus growled at him.
That was weird. He actually had planned to go for a run, but it appeared Zeus had other plans.
“Nah, I think I need a ride. May hit the continental divide and check the boarder out.” Zeus was practically wagging his tale at this. Odd.
Damian clutched his heart, “Ow, no trust in my word.” A chuckle escaped his lips.
He stood scoffing at his friend's fake hurt, and walked out of the office making his way to the garage to get his baby out to play.
“Be safe playing in the snow.” His Beta called out after him.
Sometimes he hated that guy, he thought to himself with a grin as he arrived, letting his eyes absorb his sweet baby. His black and chrome Harley Davidson Heritage bike was a thing of beauty. The only thing that could beat riding on his baby was running in his wolf form.
He gave it a once over, making sure everything was in working order before putting on his coat and helmet and opening the garage door. Letting the engine purr beneath him was just what he needed as he led it down the driveway onto the open road.
That’s all he needed; some fresh air.
