Chapter 11Sean opened the apartment door quietly, a little surprised his lock code still worked and his mother hadn’t changed it and dumped his belongings outside. He doubted this meant he was forgiven, though. No sign of his mother when he went in. She must still be in bed. He took off his boots and padded quietly into the kitchen. Kathleen was sitting at the kitchen table. “Ah. Um. Hi.” Lame, but it was all he could manage. She still had on yesterday’s clothes, and going by the dark circles under her eyes, she hadn’t been to bed. She didn’t ask him where he’d been. She must be well aware of the answer.
