The morning light filtered through the cabin’s window, soft and hazy, but Akamelia felt no warmth from it. The room was cold, her mind clouded by restless thoughts. She hadn’t slept well, and the tension between her and Rian still hung in the air like a thick fog.
Rian was already up, staring out the window with an intensity that made her stomach turn. Something was off, and she knew it.
“Rian,” she said softly, sitting up. “We need to talk.”
He turned to her, his eyes serious and a bit… conflicted. “There’s something I have to tell you, Akamelia. Something important. And I should’ve told you earlier.”
Her heart raced as she looked at him, waiting for whatever heavy secret he was about to drop. “What is it?”
Rian stepped closer, his jaw tight. “I haven’t been completely honest with you. I’m not just some traveler. I’m... Prince Rian. Heir to the throne.”
For a second, Akamelia didn’t move. She didn’t breathe. The words hit her like a punch, knocking the wind from her lungs. “You’re what?”
“I’m the prince,” Rian repeated, his voice soft but steady. “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to see me differently. I didn’t want you to think of me as royalty, but as someone you could trust.”
Akamelia’s thoughts spun. A prince? This whole time, the man she had been falling for had been hiding something so huge, so important, from her. She stood up, feeling anger and hurt bubbling inside her.
“You should have told me from the beginning,” she snapped, pacing back and forth. “I trusted you, Rian! And now you’re telling me everything we’ve shared was built on a lie?”
“It wasn’t a lie!” Rian stepped forward, his eyes pleading. “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want my title to change things between us. I didn’t want you to feel like I was some untouchable royal. I wanted you to know me for who I am, not what I am.”
Akamelia stopped pacing, her chest tight with emotion. “But this changes everything. You’ve been hiding something huge, and now you’re just dropping it on me like it’s no big deal. How can I trust you after this?”
Rian’s face softened with regret. “I know I should have told you sooner, but I was scared. Scared that if you knew the truth, you’d walk away. I’m not just some prince who lives in a palace. My life is complicated. My family expects me to marry someone they’ve chosen. It’s a royal tradition.”
Akamelia’s heart clenched. “So, you’re engaged?”
“No,” Rian said quickly. “But it’s expected. It’s what my family wants, but it’s not what I want. I don’t care about tradition. I care about you.”
She shook her head, feeling overwhelmed. “This is too much, Rian. You’re telling me that not only are you a prince, but you’re supposed to marry someone else? What am I supposed to do with that?”
“I’m telling you this now because I want you to understand,” Rian said, stepping closer. “I’m not just some royal figure. I’m a man who’s trying to figure out how to live his own life. And I want you in that life, Akamelia.”
Her heart twisted. She cared about him deeply but this was a lot to take in. Everything felt like it was spiraling out of control. She had already lost so much, and now this? Could she really trust him again after all this?
“I don’t know, Rian,” she whispered, turning away. “I just… I need time. I need to think.”
Rian reached for her hand, but she pulled back. “I understand,” he said quietly. “Take as much time as you need. I’m not going anywhere.”
With that, he left the cabin, leaving Akamelia alone with her thoughts. The silence felt heavier than before, and the confusion in her heart only grew. She sat down, burying her face in her hands.
How could she move forward from this? Everything she thought she knew about Rian had been shattered. He was a prince, bound by royal duties and expectations. Could she really fit into that world? And even if she could, did she want to?
For the first time in a long while, Akamelia felt lost. The road ahead wasn’t clear, and her heart was torn between trust, fear, and the undeniable pull she felt toward Rian.
She needed time, but time didn’t always wait for the answers to come.
