The village seemed unusually quiet that evening, as if holding its breath. Akamelia walked slowly along the familiar path, her mind a whirl of thoughts. Rian wasn’t just any man he was a prince, and now her entire world felt upside down. Could she really let him give up everything for her?
The weight of his confession sat heavily on her heart. He had offered to walk away from his title, his kingdom all because of her. But was love enough to justify such a sacrifice? Was *she* enough?
When she reached her home, her mother was outside, quietly weaving a basket. The gentle crackling of the fire nearby filled the air with warmth, but Akamelia still felt a chill inside.
“You’ve been out a lot these days,” her mother said without looking up. “Something on your mind?”
Akamelia hesitated. She hadn’t told her family about Rian’s true identity. How could she? They already had enough to worry about, living day to day in the village. Bringing them into her mess of emotions felt wrong, but the pressure was building.
“Mama, I’m fine,” she replied softly, sitting beside her.
Her mother glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. “You never say ‘fine’ unless something’s bothering you.”
Akamelia sighed, staring at the ground. “It’s just… complicated.”
“Love and duty usually are,” her mother said with a knowing smile, still focused on her weaving.
Akamelia looked up in surprise. “How did you know?”
Her mother stopped weaving, turning to face her fully. “A mother always knows when her child is troubled. And if it’s not about the village, it’s usually matters of the heart.”
They sat in silence for a moment, Akamelia unsure how to even begin explaining the impossible choice she now faced.
“Mama,” she said finally, “what would you do if you had to choose between love and duty? Between what your heart wants and what the world expects of you?”
Her mother paused, her hands stilling over the basket. “That’s no easy question, child. But if it were me, I’d follow my heart. The world can be harsh, but love? Love is rare, and when you find it, you hold onto it with both hands.”
Akamelia felt her chest tighten. Was it really that simple? Could she just follow her heart and let the rest fall into place?
Later, lying awake in bed, her mother’s words echoed in her mind. She replayed her moments with Rian over and over. He was willing to give up his whole life for her—but could she really allow that? Could she live with being the reason he turned his back on his royal destiny?
Early the next morning, there was a soft knock at her door. Akamelia opened it to find Rian standing there, his face filled with uncertainty.
“Can we talk?” he asked quietly.
She nodded, stepping out into the cool morning air. They walked in silence for a while, the village slowly stirring to life around them. Akamelia could feel the weight of what was coming, and she wasn’t ready.
Finally, Rian stopped and turned to face her. “I’ve been thinking a lot,” he said, his voice gentle but firm. “I need to know can we make this work? Can we really be together, despite everything?”
Akamelia’s heart pounded, but she couldn’t find the right words. Instead, she looked away, staring at the ground.
“I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “You’re a prince, Rian. You belong to a world I don’t understand, a life I’m not ready for. How can I fit into that?”
Rian stepped closer, taking her hands in his. “I don’t care about that world, Akamelia. I care about you. I’m not asking you to become someone you’re not. I love you just the way you are.”
“But what about your family? Your kingdom?” she asked, her voice breaking. “They expect you to marry someone of royal blood. You can’t just walk away from that, can you?”
“I can,” he said, his grip on her hands tightening. “I will. I’ve never felt like I belonged in that life. And after meeting you, I know what I want. I’m willing to give up the throne if that’s what it takes to be with you.”
Akamelia’s mind spun. It sounded too good to be true, but also terrifying. “You’d give up everything? For me?”
“For us,” Rian corrected. “I know it’s a lot to take in, and I’m not asking for an answer right now. I just need you to know how serious I am.”
Tears welled in Akamelia’s eyes, but she held them back. She had never been so unsure of herself, and yet, there was a part of her that wanted so badly to believe in the life he was offering her.
“I need time,” she whispered, turning away.
“I’ll wait,” Rian said softly. “Take all the time you need.”
He walked away, leaving her alone once again, her heart aching with uncertainty. As the morning sun rose higher in the sky, Akamelia realized that no matter what choice she made, her life would never be the same again.
