Chapter 4: The First Lesson

327 Words
The morning fog hung thick over Oakhaven High, masking the old stone clock tower in a shroud of gray. Clara sat at her desk near the back of the classroom, her eyes fixated on the brass compass resting inside her open backpack. It hadn't stopped humming since last night. Every few minutes, a faint, rhythmic pulse rattled against her textbooks, silent to everyone else but deafening to her. She pulled out her notebook and opened it to the pages covered in her grandfather’s handwritten notes. Scattered across the margins were sketches of the exact circular runes she had seen at the bridge. Beside them was a single line written in dark red ink: The seal demands balance, not strength. "Focusing on history, or just staring into space?" Clara flinched, slamming her notebook shut. Julian was leaning against the adjacent desk, dressed in the dark, immaculate school uniform that somehow looked tailored specifically for him. To the rest of the school, he was merely the quiet, mysterious transfer student who had arrived two days ago. No one guessed that beneath his refined composure lay a creature centuries old. "You shouldn't be following me around," Clara whispered under her breath, glancing toward the front of the room where the teacher was writing on the chalkboard. "People will start asking questions." Julian leaned in slightly, his voice a smooth, quiet murmur that barely carried past her shoulder. "Let them ask. My priority is ensuring you don't accidentally detonate that compass before sunset. You triggered its core mechanism when you touched the broken seal last night." Clara’s breath caught in her throat. "I triggered it?" "It reacted to your bloodline," Julian said, his dark eyes fixing onto hers with intense clarity. "The seal didn't break on its own, Clara. Someone is actively unspooling Oakhaven's defenses from the inside. And until you learn to control that artifact, you are the biggest target in this town."
