Shadows in the Light

The morning sun poured in like it wanted to burn every lie away. I lay in bed, heart pounding, thinking over everything Cole had said. But there was something off—he wasn’t just scared; he was hiding. The moment I got up, I knew I had to push harder. I headed downstairs, where Janet was sorting the mail. “Janet,” I said, trying to sound casual but firm. She looked up, surprised. “Miss Stella.” “I need to know the truth. About Bree, Cole… everything.” Her smile vanished, replaced by a shadow of fear. “Stella, this isn’t just family drama. There are things you don’t understand. Powerful things.” I leaned in. “Try me.” She took a deep breath. “There’s a name whispered in the halls—Lena Sterling.” My heart stopped. My mother? Janet nodded slowly. “She’s not as sick as everyone thinks. Some say she’s awake, watching. Waiting.” Later, Cole called. “Meet me at the park,” he said, voice low. When I arrived, Cole was pacing nervously. “They’re onto us,” he said. “Bree found out you’re awake.” I felt a chill. “So, what now?” He swallowed hard. “We need proof. Something big to expose them.” I nodded, but inside, I was already plotting. That night, I snuck into the estate’s study. Heart racing, I rifled through files, desperate for anything. Suddenly, footsteps. I hid behind the curtains as Bree entered, smug as ever. “Looking for dirt, Stella?” she sneered. “You’re too late.” My blood boiled. “Who’s helping you?” I hissed from the shadows. She laughed. “You think you’re smart? You’re a pawn.” Before I could react, she snapped her fingers. Two guards appeared. But just as they closed in, the door burst open. Janet, wielding a baseball bat, charged in. “Get out of here!” she shouted. Chaos exploded. I slipped past the guards, heart hammering. Outside, Cole waited, looking shaken. “I thought I was done with this family,” he muttered. I grabbed his arm. “Not yet. We’re just getting started.” As we drove away, my phone buzzed again. Unknown Number: You don’t know what you’re messing with. I smiled coldly. “Oh, but I’m about to show you.”
