My eyelids felt heavy on my eyeballs as I tried to open them. I counted to 5 and opened them. White was all I saw but after blinking a few times, my vision returned.
Someone was holding my hand, the warmth coming from my mother. I look over at her and smile slightly. Her eyes held concern, her smile held joy. She leaned over to kiss my forehead and cheeks.
As she leaned back into her chair next to me, I look around. The unfamiliar smells hit me as I try to understand where we were. The bed I was laying on was slightly uncomfortable and scratchy. A heavy blanket was laying on top of me.
Mom says softly "I'm glad and relieved you are finally awake. You've been unconscience for three days my daughter." Her hand squeezed mine as she told me.
Three days?! I try to think back to what happened.
I remember going to school, being called to the headmaster's office and seeing my mother. Then finding out I have a half-sister. I look into my mother's mismatched but beautiful eyes.
"Mom, where is Raven? Where is Zander? Where are we?" My questions flew out of my mouth before I could think.
Mother just looked at me as if she knew I'd ask them. "Raven is safe, she is not very far. Zander is safe at home. I told him that you were going to stay at a friend's place to work on a project you both needed for school, so he didn't worry. While I hate lying to him, he must be kept safe. As for where we are, it's a cabin I have had for a few years. This place isn't easy to get to. We are safe here." She says matter of factly.
I sit up slowly, my eyes scanning the rather large room. A stone fireplace was on one wall. The stones were shades of grey and black, each a different shape. As my eyes rose, they stopped on a painted picture right above the mantle.
I felt drawn to it so I slowly stood up, making sure I didn't lose my footing. I felt my mother's gaze on me as I made my way closer to it. Tilting my head to one side, I breathed deeply. The painting was of a woman near a river, her feet lost in the beautiful blue waters. Behind her, was a forest with a shadowed figure standing watch over her. The woman had light silver hair, her eyes half-closed lost in thought. I squinted my eyes towards the forest. I saw the shape of a black horse and a man upon him. The only part of the man I could see clearly was his eyes.
I heard my mother breathe deeply from right next to me. I reach my hand out and give her hand a slight squeeze. She pulls me into a tight hug, tears silently landing on my top.
I just hold onto her for dear life, letting her cry. My hands gently rubbing her back.
After a long while, she lifts her face and rubs her eyes. Smiling softly at me, she looks back at the picture, lifting her hand and ever so softly rubs the forest where the man was.
"Your father painted this. He gave it to me the night you were born. He told me, "This is so I can watch over you and Bella."
I gazed at the painting, wondering how he was to keep watch with a painting.
Mom walked towards the kitchen and I followed as my stomach grumbled. I sat at a table as she pulled out some blood from the fridge. I licked my lips as she poured some in a glass and placed it in the microwave. I watched it spin for 2 minutes and finally it was how I liked it. I walked to the microwave and grabbed the glass, loving the intoxicating smell. I took a small sip, savoring the flavor. Mom was thinking about what we could eat.
While I sat back down at the table sipping on my blood, my mom was leaning on the counter in deep thought. I look towards the painting again. I thought I saw those eyes so like mine, silently watching us with love. I tilted my head and I swore the eyes followed my every move. "So this is how he watched over us huh? It was spelled. I hope we find him soon so I can get to know him." I thought to myself as I smiled sadly. Sipping on my blood, I turn to mom as she looks at me.
"Maybe we can make a stew? That sounds like a good idea since I haven't eaten in a few days mom. I can pull out the meat and you get the veggies from the garden. Carrots and potatoes with either chicken or beef." I mention to mom as I stood up to grab the meat from our freezer. Mom nods and smiles as she steps out of the side door that apparently goes right into the garden. I look into the freezer, wondering which one would be better. I close my eyes and place my hand in, landing on something and I pull it out. As I close the door, I smell the beef as I place it in the sink.
I finish my glass of blood, my thirst being content for now, I wash out my glass. As I place it on the drying rack, I hear my mother's voice as she opens the door. "Guess whom came by wanting to check on you honey." Her voice was happy as I look up.
As a grin spreads across my face, Raven had her arms already around me in a tight hug. I link my arms around her just as tightly.
