Logan ~~FLASHBACK~~ I walk through the dimming streets, my boots heavy with each step, the weight of the day pressing down on my shoulders. The job search had been fruitless. Rejection after rejection. No one is willing to take a chance on me. Another day wasted. Another dead end. But I still had her—my girlfriend. Or at least, I thought I did. I spent the whole day hunting for work, hoping for some break, some way out of this mess. But when the sun began to set, I decided I’d had enough. I was done with the search. I was done with the failures. I was heading to her place. Hoping that maybe, just maybe, she’d have some comfort to offer. But when I got there, I found the door slightly ajar. A chill ran through me. Something wasn’t right. I knocked, but the sound of laughter spilled out from the other side before I even had the chance to raise my fist. I pushed the door open and froze in the doorway. There she was. My girl. But not the girl I knew. She was in the arms of another man. Laughing. Her back to me as if nothing had ever been wrong. As if I wasn’t the one who was supposed to be there, holding her, sharing this moment. I felt my breath catch in my chest, my heart pounding like a drum. I stood there, motionless. Watching them. But she didn’t notice. Not at first. “Logan, you’re home early,” she said, like I was the one who’d just walked in on something. My mind raced as my throat closed up. “What the hell is going on?” I asked, my voice low, hoarse. She didn’t seem surprised. No apology. No hesitation. Just a sigh. “I can’t keep doing this, Logan. You’re not the man you used to be. No job. No house. I can’t live like this. I have needs... And you can’t fulfill them anymore.” Her words hit me like a punch. Like the world just slipped out from under me. I didn’t know how to react. Didn’t know what to say. I had nothing left to say. She stepped toward the door and gave me that look—the look that said everything without saying a word. “You need to leave. I’ve made up my mind.” I didn’t argue. I didn’t beg. I just turned around and walked out of the apartment, the sound of the door clicking shut behind me echoing in my ears. I didn’t know where I was going. I just walked. I found myself at a bar, sitting in the dark with the cold sting of whiskey burning down my throat. The familiar taste did little to dull the ache in my chest. My head buzzed, but it wasn’t from alcohol. It was from the emptiness. What the hell was I supposed to do now? She was gone. I had no job. No future. No reason to stick around anymore. I thought I had it all figured out, but now... now I am lost. I downed another shot. Then another. I stared at my phone, buzzing with messages I didn’t want to read. I couldn’t deal with it. The constant reminders of failure, of people who thought they had the answers for me. I pushed the phone away, focusing instead on the amber liquid in my glass. Then, like a light turning on in the darkness, the decision hit me. I needed to leave. I needed a fresh start. I couldn’t stay here anymore, not in this place where everything reminded me of what I had lost. Without thinking, I stood up, slid my jacket on, and walked out of the bar. The night air hit me like a slap, but it was refreshing. I could breathe for the first time in what felt like weeks. The only thing I knew for sure was that I wasn’t going to stay here any longer. I climbed into my truck and started the engine. No plan. No destination. Just a gut feeling that I had to go. I needed to get away from it all. Start over. I drove through the night. The moon hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the road ahead. The hum of the engine was the only sound, except for the occasional pop of a tire hitting a bump in the pavement. I didn’t care where I was going. Ohio seemed like a good enough place to start. A clean slate. A place where no one knew my name. But then, something strange happened. I was halfway to Ohio when I heard it. A voice. Soft at first, like the wind carrying a whisper. “Find me.” I stopped dead in my tracks, shaking my head. Booze must’ve been messing with me. I took a breath and kept walking, but then it came again. Clearer this time. “Find me.” A shiver ran down my spine. My pulse kicked up. The voice pulled me, leading me into the thick woods just outside town. My boots crunched against the fallen leaves, and with every step, it got louder, more desperate. I didn’t understand why I was following it—only that I had to. Then, amidst the tangled branches and moonlit shadows, I saw her. A baby girl, barely a few months old, wrapped in a small bundle of cloth. Big, bright blue eyes locked onto mine, and in that moment, she claimed me. Just like that. I knelt down, hesitating only for a second before scooping her up. Tiny. Warm. She wasn’t crying. Just… staring. Like she knew me. “What’s your name, little one?” I whispered. A soft hum filled my head, and then, as if the universe itself answered me, the same voice echoed in my mind. “Gessica.” I let out a sharp breath, staring down at her. “You sure are full of wonders, little one.” And then, something even stranger happened. Her bright blue eyes shifted, darkening into a deep hazel. Wise. Knowing. Like she had seen more than I ever would. I didn’t question it. Didn’t need to. All I knew was I couldn’t leave her there. I had lost everything that night, but somehow, I had found her. No second thoughts. I carried her to my truck, got in, and drove. Ohio seemed like a good place to start over. And this time, I wasn’t alone. ~~END OF FLASHBACK~~ The memory fades as I run a hand through my hair, shaking off the ghost of that night. I glance toward the bed where Gessica stirs, letting out a soft, sleepy whimper. I smiled, getting up from my seat. “I’m right here, little one.” No matter what mysteries surround her, no matter what fate has in store—one thing’s for sure. I’ll always be here to protect her. I play with her for a while, listening to her giggles as she clings to my fingers. Then, with her bundled up in my arms, I headed out to buy her a present and a cake. Today isn’t just any day—it’s the day I met her. The day she changed my life forever. The day she became my reason to live.
