Chapter Five
May-June 1869
Grant found Gabe at breakfast the next morning sitting with Cat and some others. As soon as he sat down, he realized that the man was not Cat. Cat was busy taking care of the twins, who were moving around and jumping with boundless joy.
Grant and Gabe immediately began to talk about horses. Gabe’s first question was, “When did you get interested in raising horses?”
Grant replied, “It just came to me when I was riding west of Denver near the mountains. I rode into this fantastic valley in the foothills, and it just looked like a herd of good horses belonged in it. I’m buying that valley and maybe some more land adjoining it. A crew is building log cabins there for Angelina and me and for Dale and Martha.”
