Chapter 2

Natasha’s POV Nathan had always been there. As far back as Natasha could remember, he had been part of her world, woven into it through family dinners, private schools, and summers spent in sprawling estates that felt more like kingdoms than homes. Their fathers had been inseparable since childhood, two boys who grew up dreaming big and went on to rule empires. It was only natural that the bond passed down to their children. Natasha’s father built Redline Industries into a powerhouse, earning his place among the top seven richest men in the United States. Nathan’s father, Walter, however, stood far above them all, the single wealthiest man in the nation, untouchable and legendary in his own right. He was the visionary behind Blackspire Group, Ashford Global, and Everest Industries, corporate giants that shaped markets and bent economies to their will. To the outside world, their lives glittered with privilege and excess, defined by private jets, guarded estates, and influence few could challenge. To Natasha, it all felt good. This was the life she had grown up in, the only one she had ever known. And Nathan, despite the power and legacy tied to his name, it felt ordinary. They grew up together, best friends by default, partners in mischief, confidants in a world where trust was rare. Somewhere along the way, Natasha’s feelings shifted. Friendship wasn’t enough anymore. She watched Nathan grow into a man, quiet, thoughtful, distant in ways she couldn’t reach, and she fell in love with him. But Nathan never looked at her the same way. She tried to be patient. She tried to be subtle. When that didn’t work, she became direct. She told him how she felt, again and again, pressing him to see what she saw, to choose her the way she had already chosen him. Each refusal chipped away at her pride, her certainty. Desperation crept in where confidence once lived. One night, through tears and frustration, she said the words she knew she shouldn’t have. “If I can’t have you, Nathan, I’ll kill myself.” She cried. He went silent. Nathan didn’t love her but he cared. And that care turned into pity. Out of guilt, out of history, out of a hope that maybe feelings could grow, he agreed to try. For a month, they dated. To Natasha, it felt like winning, at first. Dates became photo opportunities, every moment captured and filtered. She introduced him to new friends almost every week, eager to be seen, to be admired. Luxury followed everywhere she went, designer shoes, handbags, jewelry, and cars she wanted simply because they were new. His money paid for it all, often without his knowledge, because to her, it was expected. This was the life she knew, the life she wanted. But Nathan changed. He grew quieter, distant. The warmth he once showed her faded into restraint. He wasn’t impressed by the cameras, the labels, the endless spending. He didn’t want a life built on display and excess. By the end of the month, Natasha could feel it slipping away. What she had fought so hard to claim was never truly hers. And Nathan, gentle, honest Nathan, was already looking for a way out. One quiet afternoon, Nathan’s message appeared on Natasha’s phone. “Hey Nat, what’s up?” Her heart skipped. She stared at the screen for a moment, excitement rushing through her before she forced herself to calm down. She didn’t want to seem too eager. Taking a breath, she typed back carefully. “Hi my love. I’m not fine, I miss you so much” she wrote, adding a touch of sadness she hoped he would feel.” A moment passed. Then another message came through. Can we meet tomorrow at 6 p.m.? Per Se. Natasha gasped softly, her eyes widening. Per Se, one of the most prestigious five star restaurants in the country. Her fingers trembled as she replied. “Sure, baby. I’ll be there.” She set the phone down, her smile spreading uncontrollably as her thoughts raced ahead of her. What if he wants to propose? she wondered, her heart pounding. What if he’s finally fallen in love with me? Hope bloomed in her chest, bright and unstoppable. For the rest of the day, she moved through the world wrapped in that excitement, already imagining the evening, the lights, the whispers, and the moment she had waited so long for. That night, sleep refused to come easily. Natasha lay in bed staring at the ceiling, her mind racing ahead to the next evening. Every possible outcome played itself out in her thoughts, each one more exciting than the last. Unable to contain her anticipation, she sprang into action. She booked a professional makeup artist, ordered the finest designer dress she could find online, and scheduled a stylist to perfect her hair. Everything had to be flawless. This moment had to be perfect. Satisfied, she finally allowed herself to rest, falling asleep early with a smile on her lips, willing the night to pass quickly. Morning came too slowly for her liking. She moved through the day in a blur of excitement, ticking off every preparation with care. By 5:30 p.m, she was ready, elegant, radiant, and confident. She slipped into her heels, picked up her clutch, and walked down to her waiting Rolls Royce. Moments later, the car glided smoothly onto the road, carrying her toward what she believed might change her life. When she arrived at the restaurant, she spotted Nathan almost immediately. He looked composed, handsome, and impossibly calm. They exchanged warm greetings, the familiar comfort between them settling easily. But Natasha barely heard a word he said. Her attention was fixed on his coat, tailored, elegant, different. “Oh my gosh,” she thought, her heart fluttering. “With the kind of coat he’s wearing, it feels like he’s going to propose.” Soft music drifted through the air as they were led to their reserved table. The atmosphere was intimate, candlelight reflecting off polished surfaces, the world outside fading into irrelevance. They sat across from each other, the silence between them heavy with expectation. Nathan inhaled slowly, his expression turning serious. “I” And in that single moment, Natasha’s breath caught, her heart pounding as she waited for the words she had been dreaming of for so long.
