The suspension

*7:47 AM. Floor 25. Boardroom A.* Elma stood outside the glass doors. Hands clammy. Her reflection stared back. Not the girl from the river. Not the charity line girl. The second-hand blazer fit. The shoes pinched. She stood straight anyway. Today was her first day in the executive admin pool. Linda had warned her last night. _If Catherine called you to floor 25, it’s not for coffee. Hold your ground. Don’t cry in front of them._ Elma hadn’t cried in front of anyone since she was 12. She wasn’t starting now. The doors slid open. Glass. Steel. City view. Ten people. Joseph at the far end. Catherine to his right. Nathan near the middle, arms crossed, watching her like he was waiting to see if she’d break. “Sit down, Okonkwo,” Catherine said, not looking up from her tablet. Elma took the empty seat. Closest to the door. Always have an exit. Her bag sat in her lap. Strap gripped tight. Leather warm from her hands. Something to hold so she didn’t clench her fists. “We’re here because of you,” Joseph said. His voice filled the room. Too loud. Too certain. Elma kept her face neutral. “Because of me?” Joseph leaned forward. “Yesterday evening. Security caught you in the parking garage with Nathan Hayes. After hours. Alone.” Elma’s stomach dropped. She didn’t look at Nathan. She looked at Joseph. The man who lied to Aunt Marian. Who followed her to Level B2 like he owned the dark. “That’s not what happened,” she said. “Then what happened?” Catherine finally looked up. Eyes sharp. Calculating. Deciding which version cost less. “I received an anonymous email. Meet at Level B2. I went to find who was harassing me. Joseph was there.” A murmur. Executives shifted. One woman glanced at Joseph, then away. Joseph smiled. Slow. Ugly. “See? Lying again. Turning this into harassment for sympathy.” “I have nothing to gain from lying,” Elma said. “You have everything to lose if the truth comes out.” “That’s enough,” Catherine cut in. “This looks bad. Junior admin alone with a Hayes executive after hours. Violates policy.” Nathan spoke. “Policy also says we investigate before we suspend.” Catherine turned. “Are you defending her, Nathan?” “I’m defending due process.” His voice didn’t waver. He wasn’t looking at Joseph. He was looking at her. For the first time, Elma didn’t feel alone at the table. This wasn’t just about her. This was power. Who controlled Hayes Corp. Whose word mattered. Whose got erased. Joseph stood. “I move to suspend Elma Okonkwo. Effective immediately.” Elma’s heart stopped. Not again. Not after everything. “No,” Nathan said. The room went quiet. Even the air stopped. Nathan stood too. “I move to keep her on active duty. If she did wrong, prove it. If not, you owe her an apology.” Catherine set her tablet down. The clack was loud. “Fine. We’ll vote.” Elma counted hands. Didn’t mean to. Joseph. Yes. Catherine. Yes. Three others. Yes. Nathan. No. Two others. No. 5 to 3. The floor tilted. Five faces satisfied. Three looked like they’d lost a fight they never wanted. “Motion passes,” Catherine said. “Elma Okonkwo is suspended pending investigation. Turn in your badge at HR.” Elma stood. Legs numb. Made herself move. If she sat down, she wouldn’t get up. She looked at Joseph. “You win this round. But you won’t win the war.” Joseph’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “We’ll see, niece.” _Niece._ The word slapped. Like he could still claim her. Throw her out again. Elma walked out. Doors hissed shut behind her. --- *HR was on floor 3.* Elma walked down 22 floors. Didn’t trust the elevator. Footsteps echoed. No one spoke to her. No one asked if she was okay. By floor 10, her thighs burned. She didn’t stop. Linda met her at the desk. Face fell. “They suspended you.” Not a question. Elma nodded. Handed over her badge. Plastic felt heavy. All the early mornings. Late nights. Silent swallowing. Linda took it. Slipped a folded note into Elma’s hand. Fingers brushed hers. Quick. Deliberate. “From someone who still believes you,” she whispered. Elma left without looking back. No wave to security. No check over her shoulder. Let Joseph watch her leave with her head up. Outside, Destiny waited. Took the day off. Just in case. Denim jacket. Arms crossed. Scanning the doors like she expected a chase. “Well?” Destiny asked. “Suspended.” Destiny swore. “Those snakes. What now?” Elma looked up at Hayes Corp. 47 floors of glass and lies. Sun threw shards back at her. “Now,” she said, “we prove them wrong.” --- *That evening.* Elma sat on her apartment floor with Linda’s note. It was a USB drive. No name. Scratched. Looked passed around. She plugged it in. Old laptop whirred. Screen flickered. Files opened. Emails. Contracts. Memos. 2 AM. 4 AM. Times when only liars were awake. And there it was. Timestamped email. Joseph to Catherine. Two days before Elma ever applied to Hayes Corp. Subject: Problem. Body: She’s applying to admin. Make sure she never gets past HR. If she does, use the harassment policy. I’ll handle the rest. Elma read it twice. Three times. Words didn’t change. Cold. Planned. Her hands shook. Not from fear. From anger. They planned this before she started. Before the application. Before she walked in thinking maybe she could earn something on her own. A knock. Nathan. Didn’t come in. Stood in the doorway. Saw her face. His mask slipped. “You found something,” he said. Elma held up the laptop. “I found proof.” Nathan stepped inside. Closed the door. Lock clicked. “Then let’s make sure they can’t bury it,” he said. Outside, city lights flickered on. Inside, Elma didn’t sleep. She read every file. Copied them three times. Built a timeline. Line by line. Joseph at every dead end. At 3 AM, she stopped. Looked at what she had. Not everything. But enough to start. Linda risked her job. Destiny waited without questions. Nathan stood when everyone sat. Joseph was sure she’d break. She wasn’t breaking. She was building. Dawn came. She saved the files. Shut the laptop. Stood. Legs ached. Eyes burned. Didn’t care. They wanted her gone. She’d make sure they couldn’t afford to keep her out. Her phone buzzed. Unknown number. One text: _They know you have the drive. Run._
