~Chapter Two:
Enough Is Enough, Time To Wake Up!
Imogen slowly opened her eyes, her head spinning as she stirred from her slumber on the couch. She had fallen asleep waiting for Ethan to return after he walked out on her, the exhaustion from the previous day’s events finally catching up to her.
She groaned and stirred once more on the couch, turning to face the vast and white ceiling above. She stared at the ceiling for a few seconds before sighing out loudly.
‘So it wasn’t a nightmare.’ She thought. Just then, her senses regained focus and she noticed the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. The engine stopped, and her heart skipped a beat. Ethan was home.
Quickly, she sat up and ran her fingers through her tousled hair, trying to arrange it into some semblance of order. She needed to appear composed, even though her heart was still heavy with worry, uncertainty and a lot of ache. She couldn’t let him see how much his offer of a divorce affected her.
As Ethan stepped through the front door, his eyes fell upon Imogen. The moment he spotted her, displeasure etched on his face was evident, causing her heart to sink further. She had hoped that he would at least be less hostile towards her, that At least his anger and frustration would have subsided.
But she guessed wrong.
‘Then again…' Imogen lowered her gaze to the floor in thought. ‘I have made a lot of bad choices so far, and the worst by far was leaving…'
“Have you signed the divorce documents?” Ethan’s voice was cold, his tone laced with impatience as it cut through her thoughts, snapping her back to reality.
Imogen hesitated, her mind racing for the right words to say. She wished, more than anything, that he would just forget about the divorce proposal he had brought up yesterday. Or better yet, she wished he could forget about Kayle. But those desires seemed impossible, trapped within the boundaries of her own heart.
Deciding what was the next and best course of action, she Avoided his question, and she instead asked, her voice gentle and restrained, “How is Kayle doing now?”
Ethan’s sneer was immediate, his response sharp and cutting. “Don’t avoid my question, Imogen.”
Her heart sank further, the hope of a respite dissipating with each passing moment. She swallowed her fears and mustered a brave façade. “No. I haven’t signed the document,” she replied, her voice trembling slightly.
In an instant, Ethan’s anger flared, and he matched forward and grabbed her roughly by the wrist. Imogen winced at the force of his grip, but she refused to let her pain show. The fiery determination within her eyes matched his own. She was his wife, and she wouldn’t give up on their marriage so easily.
“Why?” Ethan demanded, his voice harsh and filled with frustration. “Tell me, Imogen!”
Her grip on his hand tightened, her voice steady but filled with a desperate plea. “Because I love you, Ethan. Because I can’t let go of what we had. I believe in us.”
Ethan scoffed, his grip loosening slightly. “You believe in us? There was no us to begin with! It was only you who had been delusional since the very beginning. I warned you if this from the first night we got married, didn’t I? The position of my wife belongs to Kayle not you. You were simply a second option, a full in, now,” he said, as if repeating a mantra. “Whether you sign those divorce papers or not, I no longer consider you my wife.”
Imogen’s heart shattered into a thousand pieces, the weight of his words crashing down upon her. She had held onto a rapidly fading glimmer of hope that Ethan would realize her love and would come to think that their marriage was worth fighting for. But now, it seemed her hopes were misplaced, her dreams cruelly shattered.
Without a word, Ethan released her wrist and turned to walk upstairs. Half way across his destination, he stopped and looked over his shoulder, calling to her.
“I advice you sign those papers while I’m being generous and offering you some of my properties. Don’t anger me and make me do things in a way that wouldn’t favor you. Sign the papers, take the money and properties and get the hell out of Kayle and I’s lives.”
With that, he turned and continued up the stairs, never for once looking back at his wife.
Imogen stood frozen, tears welling up in her eyes, her heart torn between the love she still held for him and the realization that her dreams of a future together were slipping away.
Everything she had worked so hard for and endured was slipping away because he loved someone else. Her love meant very little to him and her sacrifice were as good as dirt to him.
But if only he knew what she had left behind to become his wife. If only he knew what she had forsake and how much she had changed herself all so she could be with him.
And now that she thinks back to it, that was a truly stupid decision. Since day one, she had known that Ethan didn’t love her, at least not after he had saved Kayle from falling off a tree while she was trying to save a cat, and fell in love with her at first sight.
It was a painful thing to see. Watching your own husband smile at your best friend the way you wished he did at you. However, she endured it because she believed that Ethan would one day grow to love her and soon get over his infatuation with Kayle.
But as time went by, things seemed to get worse and she even noticed some changes in Liam, Ethan’s best friend whenever he was beside Kayle. Even Kayle herself had begun to act weirdly.
Imogen feared the worse. Her fears however, came through when Kayle confessed that she had began having feelings for Ethan.
She got angry and it was a spur of the moment decision; She flung her hand and shook Kayle off, accidentally pushing her off the stairs.
Kayle had rolled to the very bottom and there stood Ethan, Liam and several other guest who were attending Ethan’s birthday party. The look in Ethan’s eyes that day was forever stored in her mind.
That was five years ago. And till date he still looked at her with those same eyes.
Filth. Disgusting. Unlovable.
A self deprecating laugh escaped her lips at the old memory.
Truly, she had been a fool to have chosen to stay with him after everything.
Just like her other choices, that…had been the wrong choice, but perhaps it was time for her to start making the right choices.
To get her life back in track once more, she thought and glanced at the divorce documents which were on the dining table.
Perhaps…it was time for her to wake up.
Taking a deep breath, Imogen wiped her face and whispered to herself, “I think enough is enough.”
And with that, she gathered her strength and matched towards the table. She fetched a pen and flipped the divorce documents open, her hand hovering slightly over where her signature was meant to be.
She loved Ethan deeply, but if this was the way he was going to repay her love, she wasn’t going to seat by and watch.
It ends now!
Steeling her resolves, Imogen was about to put down her signature when her phone sudden chimed, indicating the arrival of a text message.
She creased her brow and stared at the screen of the device beside her, wondering what an unknown number could have sent her.
Reaching for the phone, Imogen unlocked her screen and clicked on the message. She was however, totally dumbstruck when what she saw in the message was a picture of Kayle…laying intimately in the arms of her husband while in her hospital room!
