🌷 EPISODE NINETEEN: WHEN COMPARISON STARTS TO BECOME A FEELING Olivia Carter did not like the way her mind replayed things now. It used to be organized. Clean. Segmented into useful thoughts and unnecessary ones. But lately, everything had started to blur at the edges, especially when it involved James Harrington. And now, there was someone else inside that blur. Dr Elena Brooks. That was the problem. Or at least, that was what Olivia told herself it was. She arrived at campus earlier than usual, hoping routine would fix what reflection had disturbed. It did not. The lecture hall felt different again. Not because of James this time. Because of expectation. She saw Elena before she saw James. She was already there, standing near the front, speaking with a few students with an ease that suggested she belonged in every space she entered. There was confidence in the way she held herself, not loud, but certain. Olivia did not want to look longer than necessary. But she did. Elena noticed her eventually. Of course she did. Their eyes met briefly. Then Elena gave a small polite nod. Nothing dramatic. Nothing hostile. But it stayed with Olivia longer than she expected. James entered moments later. And for the first time, Olivia noticed something she did not want to notice. The way he paused when he saw Elena. Not surprise. Not hesitation. Recognition. Familiarity. Elena smiled lightly at him. Good morning, James. Good morning, Elena. It was simple. Too simple. Olivia looked away immediately, as if that could undo the awareness forming in her chest. James moved to take his seat. But this time, something was different. He sat beside Olivia again. Not behind. Not distant. Beside. Olivia did not look at him immediately. She was trying not to react. But her awareness had already reacted before her control could intervene. The lecture began. But her focus was fractured. Not because of James. Not because of Elena. But because of the space between them. At one point, Elena contributed to the lecture discussion. Her voice was calm, articulate, confident. She spoke like someone used to being heard. When she finished, James responded briefly, expanding her point in a professional tone. It was normal. Completely normal. Yet Olivia noticed something she did not expect. They communicated easily. Too easily. Like familiarity had already built pathways between them. That thought arrived uninvited. And stayed longer than it should have. After class, Olivia remained seated longer than usual. James did not leave immediately either. Elena approached the front briefly to speak with the lecturer, then paused near James. Olivia watched without meaning to. Of course she did. You are staying in town longer than expected, Elena said. James nodded. A few more days. Good, Elena replied softly. There are still things we should finish discussing. A pause. Then she added with a light smile: It is easier when we are not interrupted by schedules. Olivia felt something tighten slightly in her chest. She did not understand why. James responded calmly. We can plan it properly. Elena nodded. Of course. Then her eyes briefly shifted toward Olivia again. This time, the look was different. Not unfriendly. Not warm. Just observant. Then she left. Silence returned. But it was not the same silence as before. It had weight now. James closed his notebook slowly. You are quiet, he said. I am always quiet. Not like this. Olivia finally looked at him. Then what is different A pause. James studied her for a moment. Then said simply: You are thinking about her. That made her still. I am not. It was too fast. Too automatic. James did not respond immediately. Instead, he leaned slightly back in his chair. You noticed her quickly today, he said. Olivia frowned slightly. That is not unusual. It is. Silence. Longer this time. Olivia looked away first. This is unnecessary. James did not argue. But he did not let it drop either. Elena is a colleague, he said. I know. A pause. Then he added: And nothing more. That sentence should have settled things. It did not. Because Olivia realized something uncomfortable. It was not Elena’s presence that bothered her. It was the way James spoke about it. Neutral. Unbothered. Untangled. Like there was nothing to define. And that lack of definition made her thoughts spiral in directions she did not want to follow. Olivia stood. I have things to do. James nodded. But before she left, he said quietly: You are comparing. She stopped. Not turning fully. Comparing what A pause. James looked at her steadily. Me. And her. That sentence did not feel like accusation. It felt like truth being stated too plainly. Olivia did not respond. Because she did not know how. She turned and left. But this time, her thoughts did not go quiet afterward. They became louder. More persistent. Because she was beginning to realize something she had not allowed herself to admit yet. It was not just that James Harrington was becoming important in her awareness. It was that the idea of him being equally present in someone else’s space… was starting to disturb something she could no longer easily control. And that was not logic. That was something else. Something she had not named yet.
