🌷EPISODE TWELVE: WHEN CLOSENESS STARTS TO FEEL LIKE A QUESTION By the twelfth episode of what Olivia Carter still refused to define, something had quietly changed in the way she moved through her day. It was not dramatic. It was not obvious. It was worse than that. It was subtle enough that she could still pretend nothing was happening, even while everything inside her was beginning to respond differently. That morning, she arrived at campus earlier than usual again. But this time, she was not alone in that habit. James Harrington was already there. He stood near the entrance of the academic building, holding a coffee cup, watching the slow movement of students beginning their day. There was something unhurried about him, as if time adjusted itself slightly around his presence instead of rushing through him. Olivia slowed before she reached him. She did not intend to. Her body simply did it before her thoughts agreed. James noticed her immediately. Of course he did. Good morning, Olivia, he said. Good morning, she replied. A pause followed. It was becoming a pattern between them. Not silence that felt empty. Silence that felt aware. You are early again, he said. So are you, she replied. A faint hint of amusement crossed his expression. I am beginning to think we are competing. For what, exactly He glanced briefly at her, then back ahead. Presence. That word lingered. Olivia adjusted her grip on her bag. That is not a competition. It becomes one when two people keep showing up in the same quiet places. She frowned slightly. That sounds intentional. James did not answer immediately. Instead, he took a slow sip of his coffee. When he finally spoke, his voice was calm. Not everything intentional is planned. That sentence should have been simple. It was not. Because Olivia felt it land somewhere she could not easily dismiss. They walked together without discussing it. That too was becoming a pattern. Neither of them questioned it out loud anymore. The corridor outside the lecture hall was nearly empty when they reached it. Olivia slowed slightly as they approached the door. James did not pass her. Instead, he stopped beside her. You hesitate before entering rooms now, he said quietly. I do not. You do. A small pause. Olivia looked at him briefly. That is not true. It is not hesitation in fear, he added. It is awareness. She exhaled softly. You are very confident in labeling things I do. I am observant. That word again. Olivia turned slightly toward him. Do you ever stop analyzing people James met her gaze directly this time. Only when there is nothing left to understand. That answer felt different. Not playful. Not distant. Something closer to certainty. The lecture hall door opened, and students began to fill in behind them. Olivia stepped inside first. But for a moment, she felt something unusual as she passed him. Not touch. Not contact. Just awareness. Like the space between them had become something she could no longer ignore. During the lecture, she tried to focus. She succeeded in fragments. But every time she paused between thoughts, she became aware of him again. Not his movement. Not his voice. Just presence. It was becoming unbearable in a quiet way. Not loud enough to disrupt everything. But constant enough to prevent peace. When the lecture ended, Olivia stayed seated longer than usual. She did not immediately leave. Neither did he. That was new. Students filtered out gradually. Eventually, the room became almost empty. James stood first. You are not moving, he said gently. I am waiting for the room to clear. It is already clear enough. A pause. Then Olivia stood as well. They walked out together without discussing why that was happening so naturally now. The hallway felt quieter than usual. Or maybe she was just noticing it more. At the courtyard exit, they slowed. You have been more present lately, Olivia said before she could stop herself. James looked at her. Present how Around me. A faint pause. Then he replied simply. You are noticing it more. That was not an answer. It was a mirror. Olivia frowned slightly. That is not what I meant. I know. Silence again. This one felt different. Less accidental. More loaded with things neither of them were naming. Olivia shifted her bag strap. I should go. James nodded slightly. But did not move away immediately. Instead, he looked at her for a moment longer than usual. Then said quietly. You do not need to keep reminding yourself to leave when nothing is happening. That sentence made her still. Nothing is happening. She repeated it in her mind. But it did not feel accurate anymore. Because something was happening. Just not in the way she understood how to describe yet. She looked at him. And for a second, neither of them spoke. The air between them felt closer than it should have. Not physically. Emotionally. Awareness again. That word was starting to define everything. Olivia finally turned away. I will see you around, she said. James watched her leave. Yes, he replied softly. You will. And as Olivia walked away, she felt something unfamiliar settle in her chest again. Not confusion. Not curiosity. Something closer to recognition she was no longer avoiding as effectively as before. Because now, even when she tried to step away from him, she was beginning to notice something unsettling. He was not chasing her. He was simply existing in all the places she was starting to realize she was already looking for him.
