Chapter 7: The Boundary Line

The trees didn’t whisper in Blackthorn Ridge — they watched. Elara had wandered farther from the cabin than she meant to. Not far enough to get lost, but far enough to breathe without Kade’s presence coiling around her like wildfire and silk. She needed space. Not from him. From everything. The air was fresh out here. Crisp. Drenched in pine and morning fog. The scent grounded her, helped keep the flashbacks at bay. No screaming. No betrayal. No heat in her chest when she looked at him. Just air. And yet… she still caught his scent every time the wind shifted. Kade. Every cell in her body reacted to it. Her wolf stretched beneath her skin, not restless… just aware. It had been silent for so long, but now it stirred — cautious but curious. She walked for nearly an hour before the forest thinned and the pack village came into view. Small cabins. A central firepit. Wolves in both forms lounging or working. Several lifted their heads to sniff the air the moment she stepped into view. The energy shifted. The whispers started before she even passed the second cabin. “That’s her.” “She’s the outsider.” “The Alpha’s keeping her close.” “She smells like broken bond—how is she even alive?” Elara kept her chin high. She wouldn’t let them see the way her heart pounded. Wouldn’t let them know how badly she wanted to disappear. “Elara?” She turned. A young female wolf — maybe late teens — stood holding a basket of herbs. Her eyes were wide, not judgmental. Just… curious. “Hi,” the girl said softly. “I like your hair.” Elara blinked. “Thanks.” A pause. “Did you really fight off rogues?” Elara nodded once. “Sort of. Kade helped.” The girl smiled. “He’s scary to most of us. But… he brought you back.” Elara looked toward the path she’d just come from. Yeah. He did. ⸻ Later, on her way back toward the cabin, she passed two warriors sparring. One of them — tall, broad, a little too confident — noticed her watching. He grinned and jogged over, shirtless and smug. “Hey,” he said, breathless. “Didn’t think you’d show your face near the fire again after last night.” Elara raised a brow. “And you are?” “Rylen. Fourth ring. Kade’s squad.” She said nothing. He leaned in a little. “We don’t get many new she-wolves around here. Especially not ones with eyes like yours.” Elara didn’t respond. His eyes flicked to her neck. “No mark, huh?” Her wolf growled. Before she could speak, the air dropped ten degrees. Then— “Back off.” Rylen froze. So did Elara. Kade stood at the edge of the clearing. Calm. Hands in his pockets. But his energy? Ferocious. He walked over, steps slow and lethal. “She’s under my protection,” Kade said evenly. “You want to test how far that goes?” Rylen backed away instantly, muttering something about training. Kade didn’t look at him again. His eyes locked onto Elara. “You okay?” She nodded. “Come with me,” he said. This time, she did. Not because he told her to. But because, for the first time… she wanted to.
