MY FIRST LOVE
Chapter 5: "Breakfast in Pajamas"
6:00am. Lin Xia's House. First Day Parents Are Gone.
The house was too quiet.
No mom yelling "Eat breakfast!"
No dad reading the newspaper.
Just... silence.
Lin Xia padded to the kitchen in her cloud slippers. Oversized pajamas. Hair in a messy bun with the cloud headband.
And stopped.
Chen Yi was at the stove.
Wearing an apron.
Wearing her dad’s old apron. The one with ducks on it.
He was flipping eggs. Hair still damp. Sleeves rolled up.
He turned. Saw her. And froze.
"Morning," he said. Ears red.
"Morning," Lin Xia whispered.
She suddenly became very aware of her pajamas. Too big. Too childish.
Chen Yi looked at her. Then looked away fast. "I... I made breakfast."
On the table: Eggs. Rice porridge. Pickles. Soy milk.
Just like her mom made.
"Sit," Chen Yi said, pulling out a chair for her.
Lin Xia sat. Legs swinging because the chair was too big.
Chen Yi sat across from her.
They ate.
It was quiet. But not awkward. It felt like... home.
"Is it good?" Chen Yi asked.
"Yeah," Lin Xia said around a mouthful of egg. "You cook like my mom."
"My mom taught me," Chen Yi said. "Before she left for her trip."
Lin Xia nodded. "My parents left too."
"Yeah," Chen Yi said. "Just us."
The word hung in the air.
Just us.
---
7:30am. Getting Ready.
Lin Xia was in the bathroom brushing her teeth.
The door was open a crack.
"Xia? Can I borrow a hair tie?" Chen Yi’s voice came from outside.
Lin Xia jumped. Toothpaste foam everywhere. "Uh! In the drawer!"
She heard him rummaging.
Then: "Found it. Thanks."
A pause.
"Your headband is cute," he added.
Lin Xia’s face went red. "Shut up!"
She heard him laugh. Soft.
---
8:00am. The Bicycle.
Chen Yi was waiting outside.
Lin Xia came out. Uniform neat. But her cloud headband was still on.
She forgot to take it off.
Chen Yi saw it and smiled. But didn’t say anything.
"Get on," he said.
She did. Arms around his waist. Face against his back.
It was getting natural. Too natural.
At the red light, Chen Yi said, "Xia."
"Hmm?"
"Nothing," he said. "Just checking you’re awake."
"I’m awake," she mumbled into his back.
---
8:05am. School Gate.
They stopped.
Lin Xia hopped off. And remembered.
The cloud headband.
She slapped her hands to her head. "Ah!"
Chen Yi was already laughing. Not loud. Just... soft.
"You forgot," he said.
"I know!" Lin Xia hissed, trying to pull it off. Her hair got stuck.
"Wait," Chen Yi said. He stepped closer.
His fingers came up. Carefully untangled her hair from the headband.
His hands were warm. His breath smelled like soy milk.
"There," he said. Putting the headband in her bag. "You look better without it anyway."
Lin Xia’s face was burning. "Thanks."
Bai Lu was watching from the gate. Again.
---
12:00pm. Rooftop. Lunch.
Chen Yi brought two lunch boxes.
"My turn to cook," he said, sitting next to her.
He opened them. Rice. Eggs. Veggies. All cut into little hearts.
Lin Xia stared. "Did you... did you do that on purpose?"
"What?" Chen Yi asked innocently.
"The hearts."
Chen Yi’s ears went red. "No. Must be the knife."
Liar.
They ate. Legs swinging over the edge of the roof.
"Xia," Chen Yi said. "Are you okay? With your parents gone?"
"Yeah," Lin Xia said. "I have you."
She said it without thinking.
Chen Yi stopped chewing.
"Yeah," he said quietly. "You have me."
---
6:00pm. Home. Cooking Together.
Dinner time.
Chen Yi was chopping onions. Crying.
Lin Xia laughed. "You’re bad at this."
"I’m not!" Chen Yi said, wiping his eyes. "Onions are evil."
Lin Xia took the knife. "Move. I’ll do it."
She stood in front of him. Chopping.
Chen Yi stood behind her. "Like this," he said, putting his hands over hers to guide the knife.
His chest was against her back.
Lin Xia stopped breathing.
"See?" he said. "Like that."
"Yeah," Lin Xia whispered. "I see."
They didn’t move for a second.
Then the timer beeped.
They jumped apart.
---
9:00pm. Living Room.
TV was on. But neither was watching.
Chen Yi was on one end of the couch. Lin Xia on the other.
Homework between them.
"Xia," Chen Yi said. "Can I ask you something?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you... like anyone?"
Lin Xia’s pen stopped.
"What?"
"Like. A crush," Chen Yi said, not looking at her. "At school."
Lin Xia’s heart was racing. "Why?"
"Just curious," Chen Yi said. Still not looking.
Lin Xia thought about the car. The girl. The teddy.
"I did," she said quietly. "Once."
"Oh," Chen Yi said. "Who?"
"Doesn’t matter anymore," Lin Xia said.
Chen Yi finally looked at her. "Why not?"
"Because," Lin Xia said. "I think he only sees me as a friend."
Chen Yi’s eyes widened. Just a little.
"Oh," he said. "That’s... that’s dumb. Of him."
Lin Xia laughed. "Yeah. Dumb."
---
11:00pm. Bedrooms.
Lin Xia lay in bed. Staring at the ceiling.
Down the hall, Chen Yi was doing the same.
Both thinking about the same thing.
Just us.
