Chapter 9: "First Confession"

Day 7. 4:30pm. Rain.

Again.

Lin Xia was at the school gate. No umbrella.

Same as that day.

The day she threw the teddy.

She was staring at the parking lot when—

"Xia."

Chen Yi. With one umbrella.

Just like before.

"Get on," he said.

They rode home in silence.

The rain hit the umbrella.

At a red light, Chen Yi stopped.

"Xia," he said.

"Hmm?"

"Do you remember this?"

Lin Xia looked around. The gate. The rain. The bike.

"Yeah," she whispered. "The day I threw your teddy."

Chen Yi laughed. Soft. "I still have it."

"What?"

"I still have it," Chen Yi repeated. "In my bag."

He reached back without letting go of the umbrella. Pulled out the small brown teddy.

The one she threw.

Lin Xia’s breath caught. "Why do you still have it?"

"Because you gave it to me," Chen Yi said. "Even if you were mad."

They arrived home. Soaked.

But didn’t go inside yet.

They stood under the umbrella. In the yard.

"Xia," Chen Yi said.

"Yeah?"

"I need to say this right."

He took her hand. Put the teddy in it.

"I’m sorry," he said. "For making you jealous. For making you cry. For making you think you weren’t enough."

Lin Xia shook her head. "You didn’t—"

"I did," Chen Yi cut in. "Because I was scared."

"Scared of what?"

"Of you saying no," Chen Yi said. "Of ruining us. Of you only seeing me as your friend."

Lin Xia squeezed the teddy. "I see you as more."

"I know," Chen Yi said. "Now."

He stepped closer. Under the umbrella.

"Lin Xia," he said. Her full name. "I’ve liked you since 7th grade. When you fell off your bike and I taught you how to ride. When you shared your lunch with me every day. When you stayed up with me during exams."

Lin Xia was crying. Again.

"I like you," Chen Yi said. "Not as a friend. Not as family. As... mine."

He wiped her tears. "Will you be mine, Xia?"

Lin Xia looked at the teddy. Then at him.

"Yes," she whispered. "I’ve been yours too. Stupid."

Chen Yi smiled. Water on his lashes. "Yeah. Stupid."

And then—

He kissed her forehead.

Soft. Warm.

Lin Xia closed her eyes.

8:00pm. Living Room.

They were sitting on the couch. Not touching. But close.

Close enough that their shoulders brushed.

"So," Lin Xia said. "Now what?"

"Now," Chen Yi said, "we date."

"Like... officially?"

"Officially," Chen Yi said. "Holding hands. Bike rides. Breakfast."

"And sleepwalking?" Lin Xia asked, teasing.

"Especially that," Chen Yi said. Grinning.

He held out his pinky.

"Pinky promise?"

"Pinky promise," Lin Xia said, linking hers with his.

10:00pm. Lin Xia's Room.

Knock knock.

Chen Yi. Holding two cups of hot chocolate.

"For my girlfriend," he said.

Lin Xia’s face exploded. "Don’t call me that so loud!"

"Why not?" Chen Yi said, sitting on her bed. "You are."

They drank hot chocolate. Legs touching.

"Yi," Lin Xia said.

"Hmm?"

"Thank you. For choosing me."

"Always," Chen Yi said. "I’ll always choose you."

2:00am.

Lin Xia woke up.

Went to Chen Yi’s room.

Door open.

She climbed in.

Chen Yi was awake. Waiting.

"Hey, girlfriend," he whispered.

"Hey, boyfriend," Lin Xia whispered back.

He pulled her close.

And for the first time, it didn’t feel like hiding.

It felt like home.
