Chapter 10: "My First Love"
EPILOGUE: 1 YEAR LATER
June. Graduation Day. Sunny.
The school field was full of balloons and cameras and crying parents.
Lin Xia stood in her graduation gown. Hair down. Cloud headband in her pocket.
"Lin Xia!"
She turned.
Chen Yi. In his gown too. Holding two bouquets.
One for her. One for him.
"You did it," he said. Grinning. "We did it."
"We did," Lin Xia said. Taking the flowers.
Four years. From 7th grade bike rides to this.
"Pictures?" Chen Yi asked.
"Pictures," Lin Xia agreed.
They took photos. With friends. With teachers.
Then just the two of them.
Chen Yi put his arm around her. "Smile, girlfriend."
"Shut up," Lin Xia said. Smiling anyway.

12:00pm. Same Tree. Same Parking Lot.
Where it all started.
The car. The girl. The teddy.
Chen Yi parked his bike there.
"Remember?" he asked.
"How could I forget," Lin Xia said.
She pulled something out of her bag.
The brown teddy.
"I kept it too," Lin Xia said. "After you gave it back."
"You’re keeping tabs on me," Chen Yi said. Laughing.
"Always," Lin Xia said.
She held up the teddy. "So. What now?"
Chen Yi took her hand.
"Now we go to college," he said. "Same city. Different schools. But same bus route."
"And weekends?" Lin Xia asked.
"Weekends at my place," Chen Yi said. "I’ll cook."
"And my place?"
"You’ll cook," Chen Yi said. "Badly."
"Hey!"
They laughed.

3:00pm. Lin Xia's House.
Her parents were packing. Again.
"We’re going on another trip," Mom said. "Two weeks this time."
"Again?" Lin Xia asked.
"You two are old enough," Dad said. Winking. "Take care of each other."
The door closed.
Silence.
Chen Yi looked at Lin Xia. "So..."
"So," Lin Xia said.
They didn’t need to say anything.
Chen Yi went to the kitchen. Put on the duck apron.
Lin Xia sat at the table. Watching him.
Just like a year ago.
"Xia," Chen Yi said, flipping eggs.
"Yeah?"
"Thank you. For being my first love."
Lin Xia smiled. "Thank you. For being mine."

8:00pm. Rooftop. Their Spot.
They came here every week.
Same spot. Legs dangling.
Chen Yi pulled out his phone.
"Look," he said. Showing her a photo.
It was from 7th grade. Sports day.
Lin Xia, 12 years old. Holding a first place ribbon. Chen Yi behind her, making bunny ears.
"I’ve had this for years," Chen Yi said. "Couldn’t delete it."
"Me neither," Lin Xia said. Showing her phone.
A photo of Chen Yi, 13. Asleep on the bus. Head on her shoulder.
"I took this," Lin Xia said. "When you fell asleep on me."
"I remember," Chen Yi said. "You didn’t wake me up."
"I liked it," Lin Xia admitted.
Chen Yi put his arm around her. "Come here."
She leaned on him.
The sun was setting. Orange and pink.
"Yi," Lin Xia said.
"Hmm?"
"Do you think we’ll last?"
"Yeah," Chen Yi said without hesitation. "Because it’s you. It’s always been you."
Lin Xia closed her eyes. "My first love."
"My only love," Chen Yi whispered back.

11:00pm. Bedrooms.
Separate rooms. But doors open.
Lin Xia lay in bed. Texting.
Lin Xia: can’t sleep
Chen Yi: me neither
Lin Xia: come here
Chen Yi: on my way
Two minutes later.
The door opened.
Chen Yi climbed in. Under the blanket.
No hiding. No pretending.
Just them.
"Good night, Xia," Chen Yi said, pulling her close.
"Good night, Yi," Lin Xia said.
And she fell asleep.
For real this time.
No sleepwalking needed.

They graduated.
They got into colleges 10 minutes apart.
Chen Yi still cooks breakfast in the duck apron.
Lin Xia still wears the cloud headband sometimes to annoy him.
The teddy sits on their shared bookshelf.
And every rainy day, Chen Yi still shows up with one umbrella.
Because some loves start with a misunderstanding.
Some start with a bike.
Some start with a thrown teddy.
But theirs?
Theirs started when they were 12.
And never stopped.
