CHAPTER NINE ALVARO WAS SPRAWLED on the floor at the bottom of the stairs, a puddle of blood beneath his head. His left hand reached upward, toward the top of the stairs, the fingers covered in blood. Fabiana screamed his name and rushed past Warwicke. He reached out to grab her wrist before she could get past but she jerked her arm out of his grip and flew down the stairs to her brother. Warwicke took the steps in three giant strides, grabbing the bat from Fabiana as she knelt beside her brother. With the bat held out in front of his body, he quickly searched the house, but saw no sign that anyone had followed Alvaro inside. Returning to Alvaro he knelt beside Fabiana, feeling for the younger man’s pulse. She was stroking her brother’s back and sobbing quietly. “He’s alive, honey.” W
