28 The hairs at the back of Anneliese’s nape rosed as an eerie feeling of being watched came over her. From the mirror in front of her, she scanned the back of the bar. There was a single man at the farthest table, so immersed in shadows, it was impossible to even distinguish his face, and there was another table in the back occupied by Frank, along with his ex-girlfriend, Anneliese’s high-school rival, Michelle McInnes, and some friends of hers. When Anneliese’s eyes met Michelle’s in the mirror, she leaned toward Frank and whispered something that got all of them sneering at her, which boded ill.
