Chapter 8

994 Words
The night draped the city in a suffocating cloak of darkness as Gabriella and Elizabeth raced through the labyrinth of winding streets. Their breaths were ragged, lungs burning with the exertion of their desperate escape. Behind them, the echoes of their footsteps mixed with the distant sounds of pursuit, George’s shadow looming, ever closer, like a predator closing in for the kill. They had barely slipped from his grasp, but the danger still clung to them, cold and merciless. The streets twisted around them like a trap, the very city conspiring to lead them into the jaws of the beast that hunted them. Each step felt heavier, each breath more fragile, as fear gnawed at their resolve. Then it happened—sudden, sharp, shattering. A gunshot split the night like a c***k of thunder, tearing through the air with deadly intent. Elizabeth’s heart slammed into her throat, her mind reeling with terror. They were running out of time. "Still running, are you? Won't be for long," George’s voice echoed in the darkness, dripping with venom, mocking their struggle. The sound of it made Elizabeth’s blood turn to ice. Elizabeth spun around, her face contorted with rage, with years of betrayal and pain. “You think we’re just going to stop, George? You think you’ve won?" Her voice wavered, but the fire in her eyes did not. "Do you remember that night? When I heard you creeping through the halls, and you ran! You ran because you were too much of a coward to face what was happening. You left me in that orphanage. Alone. You left me!” Her voice cracked, the weight of her broken heart laid bare for him to hear, for him to feel, but George’s face remained cold, indifferent. A cruel smile twisted his lips as he raised the g*n again, firing a shot into the air, the sound of it vibrating through Elizabeth’s bones. “All I ever wanted," she sobbed, her voice barely above a whisper, "was my brother…” “Your brother?" George spat, his voice rising with a fury that cut through the night like a knife. “Do you think I could cope with you? You think I could stand your constant tears, your endless sobbing every night after we lost them—after we lost everything? You drowned me in your grief, Elizabeth. You looked at me like I was the reason for all your pain, like I was just a reminder of everything we’d lost.” He took a step closer, his eyes burning with resentment, his voice raw and jagged. “You never smiled. Not once. I tried, but every time I looked at you, I saw someone who couldn’t bear to live in a world without them. It drove me mad. And you—" his voice cracked, anger and sorrow twisting together, "you abandoned me, Elizabeth. You looked at me and all you saw was our past, our suffering. You were never the same. You left me long before I left you.” Elizabeth’s heart shattered at his words, her chest heaving as sobs wracked her body. This was the brother she had searched for, longed for, and he had been just as broken, just as lost as she was. But now… now he was beyond saving. Suddenly, from the corner of her eye, she saw it—Gabriella, her closest friend, her lifeline, standing directly in George’s line of fire. The world seemed to slow, the darkness pressing in on them, suffocating and relentless. "Gabriella, look out!" Elizabeth screamed; her voice choked with raw, desperate fear. Time seemed to stand still as Elizabeth watched in horror, her world crashing down around her as the bulled cut through her precious skin. Her coat was stained with dark blood, growing every second bigger. Gabriella fell crumpled to the ground, her blood staining the pavement. "No!" Elizabeth screamed; her voice raw with anguish as she knelt beside her fallen friend. "Gabriella, please, stay with me.” But Gabriella's eyes were already losing their light, her once strong spirit ebbing with each laboured breath. Her frail hand trembled as she reached out, the last of her strength poured into one final, trembling grasp of Elizabeth's hand—a desperate attempt to hold on to something, anything, before everything slipped away. Her voice, fragile and broken, barely rose above a whisper, yet the words carried the weight of a thousand unspoken promises. "You… you have to keep fighting. No matter how hard it gets, no matter how much it hurts. Keep going, Elizabeth. Please… remember me. I love you." She paused, the effort immense, but her eyes, though dim, held that same fierce determination. "I'll see you on the other side." Gabriella’s face, though drained of life’s colour, remained steadfast, as if she was ready to fight even in death, unwilling to let go. Elizabeth’s entire body shook, trembling as she sank to her knees beside her dearest friend, the cold dread gripping her chest. She clutched Gabriella’s hand tighter, unwilling to believe it was the last time. “I’ll always be with you, dusk until dawn,” she cried, her voice breaking, as though by saying it, she could somehow keep Gabriella here, stop time, reverse the inevitable. Tears streamed relentlessly down Elizabeth’s face; her vision blurred as she watched the life slowly drain from Gabriella’s face. Each passing second felt like a lifetime, each tear heavier than the last. She held Gabriella’s hand long after it had grown cold, unable to let go. The warmth that once pulsed there had faded, leaving only silence. Elizabeth’s sobs eventually quieted, but her grief didn’t; it wrapped itself around her heart, suffocating her. Her eyes, swollen and red, burned as they dried up, yet inside, she was still crying, breaking apart in the way words could never capture. And all around her, the world stood still, as if it, too, mourned the loss of Gabriella.
