56 There’s nothing like being in a stand-off when you’re too exhausted to actually stand. I sat on the floor, back against the wall, stroking Addy’s hair, separating out blue sections for no good reason except they were there. The (supposedly good) guys in black had freed her right about the time they’d taken Wade into custody. Addy had collapsed into my arms, then both of us onto the floor, and we’d been there ever since. She’d finally stopped crying, but she hadn’t spoken yet, and neither of us was inclined to move. “You can’t have her until you tell me where you’re taking her,” I said. For the second time. “Ma’am,” began the officer who must have drawn the short straw. He’d taken off his protective headgear, but not the rest of his body armor, and his blond hair was slick with sweat
