46 I’d gotten my promised seat in a TPD cruiser, though not alongside Addy. I’m not sure how long I’d been sitting there when the door opened, but long enough to calm down and for my head to mostly stop swimming. An auburn-haired officer, young and looking fresh from the academy, helped me step from the car and removed my handcuffs. “Ma’am, you’re free to go,” he said. Rubbing my aching wrists, I stepped back for him to close the door and nearly bumped into Roger. I hadn’t seen him standing behind the officer. Roger had his court face on, the stony one that juries rarely saw and prosecutors feared.
