29 Roger was waiting for us at the car, and once Laney and I said our goodbyes, we were on our way. I was surprised Roger didn’t ask about our relationship, but he was distracted, quiet. When we reached the interstate, he said, “My sister is with Dad now.” Before I could ask which one, he added, “Deidre. Everyone else is on the way. Everyone who’ll come, I mean.” It sounded like his family dynamics were as complicated as my own. No wonder, with so many siblings from so many different backgrounds. “Do you want me to drive?” I asked. “Nice try,” he said with a ghost of a smile.
