Chapter Sixteen
KIT AND EVIE WALKED out of the Mermaid Inn and were greeted by a cool gentle breeze. A tall, muscular man came around from the back ally carrying a barrel of beer.
Kit went over to him and Evie watched as they embraced and spoke briefly. Kit brought him over and introduced them.
‘This is Adam, he’s one of the originals in the Stacks,' Kit said. 'Got me out of a few jams when I first got here.'
'Sounds like you had a handful,' Evie joked.
'Could say that,' Adam said. 'But we're always welcoming to newcomers, particularly if they're willing to join the cause.'
Evie smiled as they fell into the pattern of small talk but as Adam spoke, she thought she could remember him from somewhere. 'Were you ever in Volt?'
