THE FIRST TIME KIT fell asleep, Evie panicked. She glanced at her as she drove but gave a small smile when Kit snored lightly. Exhaustion had finally taken its toll, and Evie was glad she was resting. The quiet of the car allowed her to think for the first time in days. So much had happened since she’d left Volt. So much loss and heartbreak, but also a new sense of hope with Kit. She felt different outside the walls of her former home. Driving down the Interstate, with nothing but the empty land surrounding her, she finally got a sense of what it must be like to be free and the weight of the world on her shoulders felt little lighter.
