Alpha’s Ground

The Drave estate sat on the northern edge of Cresthaven like a king on a hill. Stone walls, iron gates, old oaks pressed close like a guard of honour. Most of the townspeople gave it a respectful distance. The ones who'd lived here long enough didn't need to be told why. Caelum stood at the window of his study, hands clasped behind his back, watching the moon descend. Mate. The word had roared through him the moment he caught her scent. A bone-deep recognition, ancient as the blood in his veins. His wolf had surged forward with a ferocity that had taken every ounce of his control to contain and Caelum Drave had spent twenty-nine years building that control, layer by layer, until it was less a discipline and more an architecture. The foundation of everything he was. Alpha of the Thornwood Pack. Not a man to be undone by a girl who'd refused his help three separate times in the space of one conversation. He almost smiled, thinking of it. She'd argued with the offer of a free bed like it was an insult. Most people in her position would have taken it gratefully, without question. She'd made him work for it needled him into framing it as a transaction before she'd accept a single thing from him. He found he didn't mind. He found, if he was honest, that he'd enjoyed it. A knock at the door. "Come in." His Beta, Jasper, entered with the loose-limbed ease that had always irritated and reassured him in equal measure. Sharp eyes, easy grin Jasper ran warm where Caelum ran cold, which was precisely why he'd chosen him. "Patrol report," Jasper said, setting a folder on the desk. Then he paused, nostrils flaring slightly. His easy expression sharpened. "You found someone." "I found the rogue scouts. Two of them, eastern perimeter. I sent them running." "That's not what I meant." Jasper studied him with the particular attention of someone who'd known him for fifteen years. "You smell like a human, Cael. A specific human." Caelum said nothing. Jasper's eyebrows rose slowly toward his hairline. "The Moon's honest truth. You met her. Tonight." He let out a low whistle. "I thought you'd given up believing " "I haven't given up anything." Caelum turned from the window. "She's human. She doesn't know what we are. And there are rogue wolves moving through my territory, which means this is exactly the wrong time to " "To what? Be happy?" Jasper tilted his head. "The pack's been waiting for an Alpha's mate for three years. The elders are restless. If there's someone out there who is actually yours " "She turned down a free room at the inn twice before she'd accept it," Caelum said. "She had forty dollars and nowhere to sleep and she still tried to negotiate the terms like I was trying to cheat her." Jasper blinked. Then grinned, slow and delighted. "Stubborn." "Impossibly." "You like that." "I didn't say that." "You didn't have to." Jasper moved to the door, paused with his hand on the frame. "Caelum you found a way to make her take the help anyway. That's already not nothing." His voice gentled, which was worse than teasing. "You've been carrying this pack alone for three years. The Moon doesn't make mistakes. Even when it sends you someone who'll fight you on every single kindness." He left. Caelum stood in the silence of his study, the folder unopened on the desk, the window full of descending moonlight. Somewhere across town, in a small inn room, Elara Whitfield was almost certainly lying awake, refusing to admit she needed the sleep. His wolf settled, just slightly. The restless, prowling tension that lived beneath his skin every waking hour it eased. Just a fraction. Just enough to feel the shape of what it might mean to put it down, with someone who would never once make it easy. Not yet, he told himself. Not until she's safe. Not until she lets me help her without an argument first. He almost laughed at himself. That second condition might take considerably longer than the first. He opened the patrol folder. He had work to do.
