-- A Silent Resolve --
Even after Lily had gone, Sofia could still feel her presence lingering in the cafe, like a shadow that refused to fade. The way she carried herself, the way she spoke…it was all too familiar, like someone who had once been important to Zhybrix. And now, she was here, standing between them, shifting something Sofia hadn’t been prepared for.
She glanced at Zhybrix. He hadn’t spoken since Lily left. His eyes were distant, locked on something she couldn’t see, and the tension in his jaw told her he was holding back more than he was willing to admit.
The silence spread, heavy and suffocating.
Sofia couldn’t take it anymore. She needed to know. Curiosity troubled her, but so did something else…jealousy and undeniable.
"Who was she to you?"
The words escaped before she could stop them. She regretted it immediately, but it was too late.
Zhybrix didn’t look at her right away. Instead, he took a slow breath, his fingers running along the edge of his coffee cup, as if deciding how much to say.
Then, finally, he spoke…his voice quiet, almost hesitant.
“Lily… she was part of my past. Someone I once cared about.” He paused, his gaze flashing to hers for only a moment. “But that was a long time ago. Things… things have changed.”
Sofia bit her lip, trying to make sense of his words, but they only left her more confused. Care? Had he loved her? And if he had, how could someone from his past still have such a hold on his life? She didn’t want to ask more questions…wasn’t sure she could handle the answers.
But the feeling stayed. There was still something between them. And that thought made Sofia feel small, like an outsider in a world she didn’t belong to.
“I didn’t expect her to come back,” Zhybrix continued, his voice quieter now. “But she won’t stop. She thinks she can pull me back into that life, Sofia. The life I walked away from.”
Sofia swallowed hard. It hurt knowing that Zhybrix was still involved in a past that refused to let go, trapped in a difficult situation even his feelings for her couldn’t explain.
“I don’t want to drag you into this,” he added, finally meeting her eyes. “This… us… it’s different.”
She didn’t know what to say. Part of her wanted to reassure him…to tell him she was not afraid, that she would stand by him no matter what. But another part of her, the part still bitter from jealousy, was not so sure. She didn’t want to admit it, but it hurt…seeing how deeply connected he still was to someone else.
“I’m not afraid of your past,” she said softly, though her voice wavered with uncertainty. “I just… I need to understand it. I need to know that I’m not just another complication in your life.”
Zhybrix’s expression changed, something like guilt flashing in his eyes. “You’re not just a complication, Sofia. You’re… something more. I just don’t know how to keep you safe from all of this.”
His words sent a shiver through her, shaking the ground beneath her feet. She wanted to trust him. She wanted to believe in what they had. But the truth was, his world wasn’t safe, and the fear of getting pulled into it worry her.
"Maybe we should… take a step back," Sofia whispered, uncertainty twisting in her chest. "You have your enemies, Zhybrix. And I don’t know if I can be a part of that."
-- A Moment of Doubt --
The words hung up between them, heavy with meaning neither of them could ignore. Zhybrix didn’t respond right away. Instead, he leaned back, running a frustrated hand through his hair.
“I never wanted this for you,” he said at last, his voice low. “But I’ve already dragged you too far into it. I never wanted you to get hurt.”
Sofia could not find the right words, to close the growing distance between them. She wasn’t ready to walk away…not yet. But his world felt like a black hole, pulling her in even every thought telling her to run.
Before she could say anything, the cafe door opened.
Lorenzo stepped inside, his sharp gaze searching the room before landing on them. He hesitated for a moment, reading the tension thick in the air, then walked over to their table, his expression unreadable.
“Everything okay, Boss?” he asked, though his eyes flashed between Zhybrix and Sofia, with obvious concern.
Zhybrix gave a short nod. “We are fine. Just... sorting things out.”
Lorenzo didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t insist. Instead, he turned to Sofia. “Got some news. Your cafe’s been targeted. Someone’s been watching it. We need to move fast.”
Sofia deeply breathed. She had been so caught up in her thoughts, in him, that she hadn’t even noticed danger getting closer.
“What do you mean, targeted?” she asked, panic filling into her voice.
Lorenzo’s expression hardened. “We think it’s one of Zhybrix’s enemies. They are making their move…and they willl use anything they can to get to him.” He hesitated before adding, “and that includes you.”
Zhybrix was on his feet instantly, his entire attitude changing. The hesitation, the uncertainty…it was gone, replaced by cold determination.
“No more hiding, Sofia,” he said, his voice firm. “I’m not going to let anyone get to you. Not while I’m still breathing.”
Sofia’s pulse pounded. Fear hooked at the edges of her mind, but beneath it was something else…something that made her stomach tighten in ways she didn’t want to admit.
It was not the danger that scared her.
It was realizing that she had already fallen for him.
And now, she wasn't sure if she wanted a way out.
-- Into the Fire --
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Zhybrix had arranged for additional security, and the cafe remained closed…a defense they could no longer afford to ignore. The threat was too close, the risk too great. Keeping Sofia safe was no longer just an option… it was a necessity.
But it wasn’t just the approaching danger that concerned Zhybrix. It was her, the way she pulled him in without trying, the way she stayed in his mind even when he knew he should push her away. She was a weakness he couldn’t afford, yet the one thing he couldn’t let go of.
Across the cafe, Sofia watched him, her heart aching with every short glance they shared. She could feel it…the unspoken words, the tension popping between them like a live wire.
They were on the edge of something neither of them could control.
And no matter how hard she tried to fight it, Sofia knew one thing for sure…she was already gone too far.
