Devica PART 11
Entrance examinations of all educational levels in Devica were longer compared to Nephrite’s real world and Rozagin. However, the failure rate was very low—only when you failed all four subjects. Even so, students were given a chance to take another exam. The result will also determine if students could get a scholarship grant.
Nephrite completed his exams early but he could not leave until the allotted exam time ends.
As Nephrite went out to find a restaurant serving affordable meals, he spotted Lin Ye’s car at the parking space near the entrance of the school.
Lin Ye got out of the car. Nephrite greeted him.
“Uncle Ye, what are you doing here?”
“I’ll take you to lunch. You still have a two-hour break before the next exam, right? I have something to tell you.”
He followed Lin Ye to a century-old noodle restaurant two blocks away from the University. As they were waiting for their meal, Lin Ye asked.
“Did you check Howard Johnson recently?”
“Not yet. I was busy with some stuff. But he called me a few times. Have you…heard anything, Uncle?”
Lin Ye took out an envelope from his briefcase and handed it to him.
The envelope contained photos of his uncle meeting people in suits, in a famous gambling house, and so on.
“Uncle Ye, did you send someone to follow Uncle Howard?”
Lin Ye looked at him. Nephrite could not read the other’s trained expression.
“You might think that for a lawyer, I’m too meddlesome.” Nephrite did not respond. Lin Ye continued, “But I can’t watch your father’s hard work fall in vain.”
“I’ve seen how he took responsibility for his relationship with your mother. He worked hard…” Lin Ye paused. “Anyway, I would have been your guardian if not for your mother’s relatives. As long as you get what he left for you, then I have no complaints.”
There were still questions inside Nephrite’s head but he was sure of one thing.
“Uncle Ye, thank you for taking care of my father and me. I will try my best to be careful.”
“Anyway, I don’t know what your Uncle was up to but based on his financial ability, meeting these people and going to these places should be impossible even if he spends your father’s pension.”
Their noodles arrived. “Do well on your remaining exam.”
Nephrite glanced at Lin Ye and nodded. “Don’t worry, I will make sure all of my father's efforts will never go to waste. Please guide me.”
______
A month later, the new semester started.
The good thing about art students was most of them prefer the quiet surrounding”
Since he signed up for morning classes, he could also do his part-time job in the afternoon.
“Raven!!!” Mary greeted him as he entered the shop. “Come, come check this carrot cake I made!”
Xion gave him a slice. “If it’s a pass, we will add it to the special menu for our shop’s first themed event.”
“If it’s a pass for you, boss, was it already good enough?”
Marcus came out of the washroom, “You don’t get it. It will taste fine for Xion even if it tastes like poison.”
“What are you saying?” Mary puffed her face in fake anger. Nephrite chuckled.
“Alright.”
“Don’t worry, if you faint, I’ll bring you to the hospital,” Marcus added.
Nephrite managed to eat all the carrot cake on his plate. “It’s good, manager.”
“See? It’s just you who insists it’s bad.” Mary pouted.
“It tastes quite right. Not too sweet.” Nephrite smiled. He can see that Xion and Marcus were just teasing Mary.
“Oh, by the way, are you guys willing to CP for the event?” Mary asked as she waved her index on both Marcus and Nephrite.
“Our first event’s first theme is Boy’s Love?” Nephrite asked, amused.
“Nope, only the two of you will CP BL.” Mary grinned.
“I thought you wanted to cosplay a male character?” Marcus asked as he sneakily took a bite from Nephrite’s carrot cake.
Mary gestured for him to stop. “Ugh! Don’t remind me!” She said fuming. “I’m too small. I would just ruin the character.”
Marcus chuckled, “Anyway, as long as Raven agrees, I don’t mind.”
It only then did the three of them notice that Marcus was biting a fork…Nephrite’s fork.
Before Nephrite could react, Mary grabbed Xion and squealed on the latter’s shoulder, her left arm flailing like a dying fish as she pointed at the other two without looking.
“Ahhhhh! Look at them, look at them! Spreading fluff! Scattering candies! Feeding people dog food*!!! Ahhh! How dare you, Marcus! PDA in front of us!!!” She glared at them, “Do it in front of customers! Ahhh, both of you. How could you? If you guys decline to play as CP… I’ll feed you dog food instead. Bleh!” Then she clung to Xion’s neck like a koala.
"..........."
Nephrite's eyes watered as he burst into laughter, “Mary, y-you…pfffttt.”
Marcus grabbed a folded tissue on the nearby table and threw it at Mary, “Who wants your dog food? Did you grab the wrong medicine?” He joked at her.
Mary threw it back at him.
“Alright, alright.” Xion put his arms on Mary’s waist, pulling her close. “Stop putting pressure on Raven. Raven, you don’t need to CP if you don’t want to.”
Nephrite scratched his temple, “It’s not that. Don’t get me wrong. I have no prejudice on this. I’m just unsure if I should…” he said, hesitating. “Plus I don’t know how to do it.”
“Actually, you don’t need anything.” Said Marcus and Mary in unison.
“They’re twins,” Xion said, shaking his head. “Both of them are now in business mode. You can’t say no anymore.”
Mary leaned away and pinched Xion’s cheek. “Babe, don’t slander me.”
“What slander. I’m clearly praising you.”
“Anyway,” Marcus interrupted, “Seriously, you don’t need to do anything. Focus on your job and I’ll do the rest.”
“Like what happened earlier,” Mary added.
Nephrite felt helpless. He glanced at Xion. He only mouthed, See, I told you.
“Alright. CP it is,” he smiled at them.
