Devica PART 13 An hour before the incident. “Are you sure you wanted to meet Mary?” Dylan looked up at Rico, his assistant and friend, as the latter sat on the edge of his office table holding a cup of espresso. “You request not to overtime for this? Also, I and Mary had nothing against each other. Why would I not meet her?” “Aren’t you worried that it’s that person’s scheme to get near you?” He waved him off, “Though it’s true that he’s always incomprehensible, he’s not as problematic as you think he is. Even if he has no self-restraint, he knows how to respect other people.” “Can you really call ‘stalking’ respectful?” “No, that’s a misunderstanding. Plus how can you call it stalking when our home was really on the same way. Considering that we would pass his house first, then did that mean I’m the one who stalked him? Anyway, he never did anything extreme.” Dylan called the driver. Afterward, he prepared to leave. “I know you’re concerned. But he honestly stopped doing that a long time ago. He’s receiving treatment.” Someone said there’s a fine line between genius and insanity. This line somehow suited Zephyr. Back then, people thought that only people who suffer extreme mental illness needed Psychiatrists. And they considered mental illness taboo. Zephyr has a high IQ. He could answer complex puzzles and problems in one go, not to mention his superior memorization and comprehension skills. However, no one could exactly understand the way he thinks. The flow of his thoughts was rapid and his opinions on things were always different. His defensive reflex was very strong and sometimes, could easily enter into debate, even with Dylan. His relatives only considered him a nuisance because of it. At some point, Both he and Zephyr gradually fell in love with each other. However, neither of them admitted it. They remained friends like they usually did. But the more Zephyr got attached, the more he wanted to know everything about Dylan. Everything. Dylan did not know how Zephyr did it but he managed to get all Dylan’s information. Not only Dylan’s birthplace but even his parents. sister, cousins, and other first-degree relatives’ names, ages, and birthplace as well. But as Dylan said, it’s hard to grasp the way Zephyr thinks. Even if he stole personal information, he never stole his photos nor followed him on the streets. Aside from that, the only thing he did on the personal information he gathered was to greet them on their birthdays. This made people feel complicated emotions. Both Dylan and Zephyr’s family backgrounds weren’t simple. The Wezel Family own a huge Conglomerate and even their ancestors were wealthy families of merchants. On the other hand, though Zephyr’s mother’s side of the family lived a normal life, his father’s family side had a long history of political power. When the Wezel’s noticed that Zephyr knew confidential information, they had him investigated. Stealing personal information was still a crime. Zephyr almost got arrested if not for Zephyr’s family and Dylan’s begging. It was a mess. But since all information was never used other than birthday greetings, both sides signed an agreement to destroy all the information and resolved the rest in peace. After that, Zephyr apologized to Dylan, ashamed of what he did. Dylan wondered why Zephyr had to do it when the latter could ask him. He could still clearly remember how Zephyr’s face paled as if he had a sudden realization. “I-I don’t understand myself. I thought it feels nice to know you more with my own efforts. O-or that I know you more than everyone w-who wants to get close to you.” Zephyr said back then, his eyes welled with tears and his voice shaking in fear. Looking back, Zephyr might have realized the problem already and kept it to himself. Yet, ever since then, Zephyr and Dylan rarely met. If Mary did not appear at that time, looking for her half-siblings, no one probably would never learn the truth. No one would learn that her half-brother suffered from childhood traumas that he kept on his own in all those years. Their circle of friends would never know that Zephyr even begged his family for him to get treated. Zephyr was not insane but he could sense that there’s something wrong with him. Yet his relatives on his mother’s side just told him that he was only making up things to cover up for his decisions and actions. And that if he really was “insane”, then he should have never realized that he had a problem in the first place. Because for Zephyr’s relatives, “Crazy People” always deny that they are crazy. Zephyr had suffered mentally…But I didn't even notice. Dylan smiled mockingly at himself. Rico watched him from the sidelines. Afterward, he stood up. “Fine, I’m worried so I’ll go with you.” “Don’t you have other things to do?” “I’m curious, too. How Zephyr's sister managed to lure you out of your office.” The travel time between Wezel Conglomerate’s main office building was only forty-five minutes away. Both Dylan and Rico sat in the backseat. Dylan brought some documents that he needed to read. Rico stared at the stack of documents between them. “I thought it’s a miracle that you’re letting yourself off to meet her. But it turned out you even brought your work along with you.” Dylan only grunted in agreement. “Next time, you should prepare a candlelit dinner with all these documents,” Rico added. “That’s brilliant,” Dylan rode on the other’s crazy ideas. His phone vibrated. Dylan read the message. “Mr. Lee, head to the cake shop on the corner street. Mary was already there.” The driver noticed that the car park in front of the cake shop was full. As they were about to pass the shop to go to the U-Turn Section, the driver suddenly pressed on the brake. “What happened?” Rico and Dylan asked almost in unison. The driver was already unbuckling the seatbelt, “Boss run to your friend fast! I’ll explain later. The culprit!” They saw Mr. Lee, the driver-c*m-bodyguard, jump over the sidewalk railing like an action star as he ran towards the direction of the cake shop. Both Rico and Dylan step out of the car to follow. There were a few bystanders at the front of the shop. Even from their distance, they could see the door slightly ajar. Just before they reached the sidewalk, they heard a shriek, startling the both of them. Mary!
