THE WARNING

1165 Words
Eve’s fingers trembled around the black envelope as she read the words again. You’re playing a dangerous game, Mrs. Sinclair. A chill crawled down her spine. Someone knew. Someone had been watching. Her eyes darted toward the hallway outside her penthouse door. Was the messenger still nearby? She hesitated, then stepped out barefoot, scanning the corridor. It was empty—eerily so. The only sound was the distant hum of the city far below. Eve inhaled sharply and shut the door, locking it behind her. She clutched the note to her chest, her mind racing. Was it Jonathan? Had he finally uncovered the truth? No. If he had, he wouldn’t send a cryptic warning. He would act. So who? She sat on the edge of her bed, the events of last night replaying in her mind. Xander had been here. Had someone seen him leave? She swallowed hard. She needed to think—needed to figure out her next move. But first, she needed to see Xander. She grabbed her phone and typed a message. Eve: We need to talk. Now. A few moments passed. Then her screen lit up. Xander: Where are you? She exhaled, relief flooding her. Eve: Home. Come now. Xander: On my way. --- A Dangerous Attraction Fifteen minutes later, there was a firm knock at her door. Eve hurried to open it, barely breathing until she saw him—Xander Vale, standing there like he owned the night. Dressed in dark jeans and a fitted black shirt, he exuded raw dominance. But it was his eyes that held her captive. That deep silver-blue, always intense, now sharpened with something even more dangerous—concern. “What happened?” he asked, stepping inside. Eve shut the door, pressing the envelope into his hands. “This was left at my door this morning.” Xander’s jaw tightened as he read the message. His grip on the paper flexed, as if resisting the urge to crush it. “Someone’s watching you.” His voice was grave. She nodded, arms wrapping around herself. “I don’t know who. It could be Jonathan, but… I don’t think so.” Xander’s gaze flicked to her, dark and unreadable. “It’s not Jonathan.” Eve stilled. “How do you know?” He hesitated. “Because if he knew about us, you wouldn’t have woken up alone this morning.” A shiver ran through her. He was right. Jonathan was not the type of man to issue veiled threats. He was a man of action. She exhaled. “Then who?” Xander paced, his expression cold and calculating. “Could be someone from my world.” Eve’s brows furrowed. “Your world?” He looked at her then, eyes glinting with something she couldn’t name. “You still don’t understand who I am, do you?” Her heart pounded. “I know enough.” His lips twitched. “Do you?” He stepped closer, and suddenly the air shifted. It was subtle, but Eve felt it—the change in pressure, the way her skin prickled, the way the room seemed to hum with something ancient and powerful. Her breath caught as Xander leaned in, his voice a whisper against her ear. “Tell me, Eve. Have you ever wondered why you feel so drawn to me?” Her body reacted before her mind did. A deep ache unfurled in her core, heat coiling at the base of her spine. Yes. She had wondered. There was something primal about him. Something undeniably magnetic. His hand brushed against her bare arm, and the sensation sent a shock through her—more than touch, more than warmth. It was fire. Eve gasped, stepping back. “What was that?” Xander smirked. “That… was your body recognizing mine.” She stared at him, pulse hammering. “You’re talking like—” “Like something more than human?” His eyes glowed—actually glowed—as he held her gaze. Eve’s breath hitched. “What are you?” Xander exhaled, running a hand through his hair. For the first time, he looked almost… uncertain. “I didn’t plan to tell you like this,” he murmured. “But after last night—after this warning—you need to know what you’re involved in.” Eve swallowed hard. “Tell me.” Xander studied her for a long moment. Then, slowly, he lifted his hands to the buttons of his shirt and began undoing them. Eve’s stomach flipped, heat rising to her cheeks. “Is this really the time to—” “Watch.” She did. And as the last button was undone, as the fabric slid off his shoulders, she saw it. Not just his body—his perfectly sculpted, powerful physique—but what lay beneath the surface. The faintest glow of silver veins beneath his skin. The way his muscles tensed, his breath deepened, his entire presence became more… more. And then, right before her eyes, she saw his canines lengthen, his pupils slit like a predator’s, his skin ripple as if something beneath it was waiting to break free. Eve sucked in a sharp breath, pressing herself against the wall. “You’re—” Xander tilted his head, those unnatural silver-blue eyes locking onto her. “A wolf,” he finished. Silence. Eve’s mind spun. Every nerve in her body screamed at her to run—to flee from the thing that wasn’t supposed to exist. But she didn’t move. Because deep inside, where logic couldn’t reach, she already knew. This was why she was drawn to him. Why his touch burned like fire. Why she had never, not once, been able to say no. She was his. And worse… she wanted to be. --- The Unraveling Truth Xander watched her closely. “Say something.” Eve forced herself to breathe. “This is insane.” A slow smirk touched his lips. “A little.” She glared at him. “You should have told me.” “Would you have believed me?” She opened her mouth, then shut it. No. She wouldn’t have. She rubbed her temples, pacing. “Okay. You’re a werewolf. That’s… that’s a thing now. But what does this have to do with the note?” Xander’s playful smirk vanished. “Because someone doesn’t want you near me. Someone from my world.” Eve’s heart skipped. “Your world?” He nodded. “There are rules, Eve. Our kind doesn’t just… mix with humans like this. And certainly not with married women whose husbands have powerful connections.” She stiffened. “So this is about Jonathan?” “No.” Xander’s voice was grave. “This is about me. And now, because of me… it’s about you too.” Eve swallowed hard. “What does that mean?” Xander met her gaze, his eyes dark with something dangerous. Something final. “It means, Eve… you’re no longer safe.”
